Swiss medical specialists documented a case of water intoxication that affected a young woman and her newborn. The woman consumed six liters of water within one day, starting from the time of childbirth.
The mother developed a condition of hyponatremia, characterized by a significant drop in sodium concentration in the blood, as well as a decrease in plasma osmolality. Three hours after giving birth, the infant experienced a generalized convulsion, and a low level of sodium in the blood was also detected in him.
Both patients, the mother and the newborn, fully recovered without suffering serious neurological consequences. The details of this clinical case were published in the publication BMJ Case Reports.
