Heavy rains in UAE cause hail and wadi floods

Strong rains fell in parts of the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, accompanied by hailstorms, as dark clouds gathered over the emirates. This period of unstable weather brought heavy downpours and impressive footage of hail falling onto the ground in both urban areas and the country's open desert landscapes.

In one striking video, a man happily collects hail into a bucket during a powerful storm. He smiles while lifting the ice and records the unusual scene on his phone as the hail strikes the ground with a loud, continuous crackle. As he continues to film and photograph, water begins to accumulate under the bucket, and a heavy flow rushes across the ground. The sound of the rising water grows louder, intensifying the drama of the scene as the storm's force becomes evident.

The flow soon becomes so strong that the man has to run, tightly clutching his kandura, to reach a safe place. The recording shows his delight in collecting the hail, which is quickly replaced by a hurried escape as the rushing water splashes around him.

In another video, published by the account storm_ae, a man is seen collecting hail from the ground in Fujairah while new hailstones continue to fall, hitting the desert landscape with a loud, distinct sound. The footage captures the unusual sight of hail accumulating on the sandy terrain while the man holds the ice, and the storm rages around him.

Heavy rains triggered water flows through wadis along Sheikh Khalifa Road towards Fujairah, where powerful currents rush rapidly through rocky beds. A video also shared by storm_ae conveys the dramatic power of the flooding water, which crashes onto the landscape with a deafening roar, sweeping through the wadi at an astonishing speed.

On October 20, the UAE Ministry of Interior issued safety recommendations ahead of expected unstable weather across the country. The Ministry strongly advised residents to remain vigilant, exercise caution, and reduce driving speeds. The public was also advised to stay away from wadis and areas prone to water accumulation, as well as to avoid going out to sea or visiting beaches.

Earlier this year, meteorologist NCM Ahmed Habib told Khaleej Times that the influence of El Niño on the UAE could become more pronounced in autumn, particularly in October and November. Habib noted: 'From autumn, especially in October and November, the effect of El Niño will be felt in our region. Currently, during the summer season, its influence is stronger in East Asia than in West Asia.'

The recent period of unstable weather in the UAE occurs against the backdrop of this phenomenon expected to have a greater impact on regional weather conditions. The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) warned that the UAE may experience above-average rainfall in the coming months, with El Niño expected to persist until early 2027.

Rain and hail fell in some parts of the UAE, forming streams near roads

In the UAE, where cooler days and windy evenings are beginning to be observed, some areas of the country experienced downpours.

Heavy precipitation was recorded in the eastern region of the UAE, causing cars to drive on wet roads. Additionally, there was hail in some places.

According to the National Center of Meteorology, precipitation was expected on Saturday with a drop in temperature. A light or moderate breeze was forecast, and clouds caused dust to rise.

On Saturday, rain fell in Ras Al Khaimah, Kalba, Masafah, and other areas of the eastern region. Footage of wet roads and drivers navigating through hail was presented.

The Storm Center shared video recordings of the rain in Masafah, Marbadah, and Shawka in the Eastern Region. Water accumulated, forming small streams along the curbs while the downpours continued.

The Storm Center also filmed hail inside a car that was falling in Ras Al Khaimah.

Ice cover formed in the desert of Sharjah and Al Ain in the UAE after hail and heavy rains

Parts of the United Arab Emirates experienced heavy rain and hail on Thursday, October 15. Videos appeared online showing cars driving on slippery roads, and people collecting pieces of ice on the highways of Sharjah.

As the autumn season approaches in the UAE, the probability of precipitation has increased, despite persistently high temperatures. Previously, the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) had forecast rain in some areas of the country during this week, issuing yellow warnings for specific zones regarding convective clouds typically associated with precipitation.

The video material shows heavy rains in Al Ain, a region that was not under an NCM warning but is often prone to precipitation. The video also shows hail falling on the road.

It appears that Sharjah experienced a downpour of hail and rain on Thursday; videos published by the Storm Centre weather account demonstrate that entire sections of the desert were covered with an icy blanket.

NCM forecasts for the coming days indicate rain on Friday, mainly in Al Ain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah. The probability of showers will be lower over the weekend, although the sky will remain cloudy. Rain is expected on Monday in Al Ain, Liwa, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah.

Rain, hail, and lightning occurred in the UAE; further precipitation is expected

On Monday, October 12, rain accompanied by hail, lightning strikes, and water runoff occurred across the UAE, particularly in the eastern and inland regions of the country. Forecasts from the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) indicate that rain may continue in some parts of the UAE until the end of the week.

Adverse weather conditions are expected to bring thunderstorms, gusty winds, and dust plumes. Precipitation varied regionally on Monday: some areas experienced downpours, while others faced hail, thunderstorms, and surface runoff.

Video footage shared on social media showed roads covered in hail, drivers navigating wet conditions, and people caught in the rain. In some locations, heavy downpours caused murky water to flow onto roads and through low-lying areas.

The NCM issued safety recommendations during inclement weather, including a flash flood warning for mountainous areas. Specifically, the flood warning was in effect from 15:30 to 21:00 on October 12, urging the public to exercise caution during rainfall and avoid areas prone to sudden flooding.

Furthermore, the NCM strongly advised residents to refrain from traveling unless absolutely necessary. Those who must travel are advised to drive cautiously, remain vigilant, and use low beams when visibility decreases. The agency also called on citizens to follow official weather forecasts and adhere to instructions from relevant authorities instead of spreading unverified information.

The central district of Sharjah was among the areas where hail was observed on Monday, according to reports from Al Mleiha, Al Madam, and Al Uqaihaidir. Videos published by the Storm Centre account showed small hailstones on sandy roads and open areas in Al Mleiha and Al Uqaihaidir. In Al Madam, another video captured hail falling on a road where the ground was clearly covered with white particles.

The change in weather in this area attracted storm watching enthusiasts. A video from UAE Weatherman showed two men standing in the rain next to a large vehicle in Al Madam around 17:40 on Monday. Another video from Al Mleiha, presumably filmed around 16:10, demonstrated stormy conditions, with rain and reduced visibility along the road.

Rain was also recorded in the vicinity of Al Ain, where bad weather affected parts of the region. Storm Centre shared a video at 20:37 showing rain falling west of Al Ain. Streetlights illuminated the downpour as water collected on the road surface, and traffic moved in wet conditions. The rain also triggered runoff along Al Watan Road towards Hatta. A video from Storm Centre demonstrated murky water rapidly flowing through the low-lying area near the road.

Such conditions pose a particular danger near mountains and wadis, as heavy rainfall can lead to rapid water level rise. Rain also fell in Shuwka, Ras Al Khaimah, on Monday. Downpours of varying intensity were noted in the eastern and northern parts of the UAE.

In addition to rain and hail, lightning strikes were recorded in Sharjah during the bad weather. A video posted by Instagram user @s_rak29, presumably filmed in Al Mleiha, showed an impressive, branching lightning bolt crossing the sky and seemingly striking the ground, causing a bright orange flash at the point of contact. Another video from UAE Weatherman was described as an image of lightning striking the ground in Hamad, Sharjah, on Monday evening.

According to meteorologist Ahmed Habib from NCM, the following areas may receive precipitation: Dubai's inland areas, including areas near Miridiif; sections of the Dubai-Al Ain road; locations along the highway connecting the two cities; Suwaihan's inland areas near Al Ain; and parts of the Al Dhafra region, including Madinat Zayed. Precipitation is expected to be light or moderate but may intensify at times, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds. Downdrafts from developing clouds may also raise dust and sand, reducing visibility, especially in open areas.
