Volkswagen has introduced a new camper van model, the Grand California, with a limited Dune Special Edition trim. This SUV variant is based on the Crafter chassis and features various elements aimed at adventure enthusiasts.
The interior of the model includes a fold-down dining area, a compact kitchen, and a built-in shower. The cabin is finished with durable Atami bamboo surfaces and wood-effect flooring. As an optional extra, the Off-Grid package is available, which includes the installation of solar panels and two 40 Ah lithium iron phosphate batteries; using this package increases the battery capacity by 40%.
Furthermore, the Dune Special Edition version was presented, distinguished by its Ascot Grey body paint, black bumpers, 17-inch Lismore alloy wheels, and 'Dune' decals. Visibility is improved by automatic LED headlights with daytime running lights. Interior enhancements include Climatronic air conditioning and ambient lighting.
The Grand California, built on the Crafter base, is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that produces 120 kW of power and 410 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the wheels either via front-wheel drive or through the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. Both transmission types are paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
It should be noted that the Grand California based on the Crafter is unavailable in South Africa, where the Crafter is offered only in van and passenger minibus configurations. Although these versions can be modified for short trips, buyers may consider the secondary market for the previous generation Caravelle in the California Coast trim, with prices for 2019 models starting at approximately 1 million rand.
