The Bulls squad has received a significant reinforcement in their forwards, signing a three-year contract with Quagg Smith, a two-time World Rugby Champion. The acquisition of Smith was officially announced on Sunday.
This veteran will add depth and proven experience to the team's backline ahead of the demanding season in the United Rugby Championship (URC) and Champions Cup.
Smith recently left Japan, where he played for the Shizuoka Blue Revs. In May of this year, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and deltoid injury, which kept him out of rugby in 2026 as he continued his recovery. He missed the Springboks international season and the Rugby World Cup match against the All Blacks.
Nevertheless, the Bulls are ready to welcome him back onto the field as early as December, which could allow him to debut in one of the local URC derbies scheduled for that time.
Smith is familiar with the teams coached by Johan Ackermann. He began his rugby career under the guidance of the Bulls' coach when Ackermann was still working at the Lions, and was an outstanding player for the Ellis Park team under his direction.
Smith stated: 'I am very happy to join.' He reported that he is recovering well from his injury and is already jogging. 'I miss rugby, but I feel good. My wife is pregnant, due in January, so the timing of joining the Bulls is perfect. Playing under Johan Ackermann's guidance (previously) was one of my best experiences. I look forward to returning early next year.'
Ackermann expressed delight at collaborating with Smith again, having previously coached him. 'When he was young, he showed character, fight, and integrity. He is a team player who has developed into a reliable player, and it was a privilege to watch his career develop and see him become one of the best players in world rugby's backline. Wherever he goes, he makes a difference, and I look forward to his contribution both on and off the field.'
