India sets new T20I record, completing 300 matches and achieving 200 victories

The Indian team secured a close victory in the second match of the T20 series against New Zealand, winning by a margin of four runs. This match took place at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday (October 24) and was a significant event for the Indian squad.

Thanks to this game, India became the second team globally to have played 300 men's T20 Internationals. Furthermore, the team registered its 200th victory in men's T20 International cricket.

Between 2006 and 2026, the Indian team participated in 300 men's T20 International matches, securing 200 wins, while losing 83 matches. Seven matches ended in a tie, and ten had no result. India's win ratio stands at 2.409. In comparison, Pakistan has played 304 T20 Internationals but has achieved only 176 wins, placing it significantly behind India in terms of victories.

In the ranking by number of wins, New Zealand is third with 135 victories, South Africa is fourth with 129 victories, England is fifth with 128 victories. Australia has won 127 matches. Uganda also holds a notable record with 101 wins in 131 matches, and Afghanistan has 99 wins. Nevertheless, India leads in the total number of victories.

While chasing a target of 181 runs, the Indian team faced difficulties. Sandeep Samson was dismissed after 14 runs, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi managed only four runs. Abhishek Sharma scored 27 runs off 21 balls, but his innings was interrupted by Mitchell Stainer. Following this, Stainer increased the pressure on India by dismissing captain Shreyas Iyer and Akshar Patel for 7 and 11 runs respectively. By the 10.5 over mark, India's score was 70 runs for five wickets.

Naman Dir attempted to stabilize the innings, scoring 31 runs off 17 balls, including one boundary and three sixes. However, after being dismissed in the 15th over, India required a substantial partnership to secure the win. At a critical juncture, Tilak Verma took charge and attacked aggressively, scoring 51 runs without being out off 26 balls, including six fours and one six. On the other end of the bat, Nitish Kumar Reddy played a steady knock of 26 runs off 13 balls. Both players scored quickly, which helped extinguish New Zealand's hopes of victory.

Mitchell Stainer, the captain of New Zealand, took four wickets, conceding 21 runs in four overs, but his efforts did not lead to a team success. Earlier, Indian bowlers struck the first blows against New Zealand. Arshdeep Singh dismissed Timifert for seven runs, Prince Yadav dismissed Finn Allen for 16 runs, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Daryl Mitchell for six runs. Despite losing early wickets, New Zealand managed to regroup and score 180 runs in 20 overs, losing five wickets.
