Head of Iran's Central Bank States Sufficient Foreign Reserves to Finance Imports Until End of Trump's Term

Abdolnaser Hemmati, head of the Central Bank of Iran, stated in an interview with Bloomberg that Iran possesses sufficient foreign currency reserves to cover the country's import needs both until the end of Donald Trump's presidential term and thereafter.

Hemmati shared this information in a post on his Telegram channel, noting that he had previously given a television interview to Bloomberg during annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

He also commented on inflation, which sharply accelerated after the 40-day war but slowed down in the three months preceding the end of Shahrivar—the sixth month of the Iranian calendar, which concluded on September 22, 2026. Hemmati attributed the initial rise in inflation to two main reasons: supply shocks caused by damage to industrial infrastructure, part of which has resumed production, and demand-side inflationary expectations, which the central bank partially mitigated through monetary policy.

According to Hemmati, the United States attempted to economically isolate Iran and increase pressure on the country, predicting an economic collapse within two weeks. However, despite the strong economic pressure on the Iranian people, Washington failed to achieve its main goal, calling the prediction an illusion.

He also raised this issue during a speech before the heads of central banks of the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia. Regarding the decline in oil revenues, Hemmati noted that oil receipts constitute a limited share of the state budget. The government plans to cover the budget deficit through other sources of income in national currency, including asset sales, energy sector reforms, and petrochemical exports.

Concerning foreign currency inflows, Hemmati emphasized that Iran continues to receive revenue from oil exports and has developed mechanisms to maintain future supplies. When asked about the central bank's foreign reserves, he confirmed that they are in good condition and sufficient to finance imports until the end of Trump's presidential term and beyond.

Furthermore, Hemmati discussed measures to compensate for the decrease in household purchasing power, including the distribution of electronic or commodity vouchers and a gradual increase in their value in rials for low-income families.
