Civil Defense issues heavy rainfall warning for Itapetininga region; over 120 mm of precipitation expected in three days

According to the agency's data, the city of Itapetininga may receive 128 millimeters of precipitation during the forecast period. Strong and moderate downpours accompanied by lightning and wind gusts are expected on Friday.

The warning for downpours, lightning, and wind remains in effect for Saturday (the 24th). The total accumulated precipitation volume is expected to be slightly higher, amounting to 22.1 mm.

Civil Defense notes that Sunday, which is scheduled for the second round of presidential elections, is expected to have a high level of precipitation—86 millimeters. Downpours are forecasted throughout the day.

These storms may lead to soil saturation and rising levels of rivers and streams, increasing the risk of flooding, flash floods, overflows, and landslides. There is also a possibility of falling trees and power outages.

Therefore, the agency advises residents to avoid flooded areas and not cross submerged streets. Safety measures include:

  • Avoid flooded areas;
  • Do not walk on flooded streets or areas with currents;
  • Maintain distance from rivers and streams;
  • During storms, do not seek shelter under trees, poles, or metal structures;
  • Carefully monitor cracks in the soil, walls, leaning trees, poles, and fissures in the ground.

In case of an emergency, the population can contact the Fire Corps at 193, as well as Civil Defense at 199.
