Poultry breeders in Piauí received guidance to reinforce sanitary practices following the confirmation of a case of Newcastle Disease in Brazil. Although there are no records or suspicions of the disease in the state itself, the alert was issued as a preventive measure.
The viral disease can result in high mortality among birds and, in rare circumstances, can infect humans who have direct contact with contaminated birds. 'Plantel' refers to the group of animals kept on a farm, poultry house, or property.
Recommendations include constant monitoring of the animals, implementation of biosecurity protocols in facilities, and immediate notification of any suspected cases to the competent health authorities.
Disease Symptoms
The most prominent signs of Newcastle Disease in animals include sudden deaths, sneezing, respiratory difficulties, neck deviations, tremors, circular movements, greenish diarrhea, paralysis of wings and legs, in addition to decreased egg production and reduced consumption of water and feed.
Regarding humans, the disease generally manifests mild symptoms and primarily affects those who work directly with infected birds. The most common signs include conjunctivitis (red and irritated eyes), excessive tearing, swelling around the eyes, a gritty sensation in the eyes, low-grade fever, headache, and flu-like malaise.
It is essential that breeders remain attentive to the behavior of the birds, as some animals may not show visible symptoms in the early stages of the illness.
Prevention Measures
Suggested care includes regular cleaning of breeding areas, strict control of the entry of people and vehicles into farms, the use of appropriate equipment during handling, and limiting contact between birds and animals of uncertain origin.
Producers must also ensure that chicks are acquired exclusively from duly registered hatcheries and follow all sanitary guidelines related to the breeding and transport of these animals. In Piauí, the actions adopted cover avian sanitary surveillance, guidance to producers, and inspection of the conditions for commercialization and raising of poultry.
Consumption of Chicken Meat and Eggs
According to Adapi, the consumption of eggs and chicken meat that possess certification issued by official inspection services, whether municipal, state, or federal, is considered safe.
How to Report Suspicions
Breeders have an obligation to immediately report any sign of the disease, particularly when unexpected deaths or abnormal changes in avian behavior occur. Communications can be made via Adapi's WhatsApp at (86) 99462-1644, through the e-Sisbravet system, or in person at any agency unit located in the municipality.
