Controversial slogans appear on Jamia University campus: 'Free Kashmir, Free Sharil Imam'

Controversial slogans, including 'Free Kashmir' and 'Free Sharil Imam,' were discovered on the walls of Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi. Photographs that appeared on October 22 captured these slogans, written in blue and red. Reports indicate that these inscriptions were subsequently removed. Due to this incident, a tense atmosphere has developed on the campus, along with reactions from student organizations.

Additionally, offensive comments directed against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) were noticed on the walls. However, information regarding who wrote these slogans or if any individuals have been identified in this case is currently unavailable.

Currently, demonstrations are also taking place at Jamia related to the demand for the restoration of the student council. The student organization 'United Students of Jamia' demands that a date for elections to the student council be announced for the current academic semester. The Jamia Millia Islamia Student Council was abolished in 2006, and elections have not been held since then.

Protesting students claim that the university administration is delaying the process by forming a committee to draft a constitution instead of holding elections. During the protests, disciplinary measures such as suspension and campus bans were taken against some students. Students are demanding the reversal of these actions. Furthermore, they have put forward demands for the removal of the Vice-Chancellor and the Security Advisor.

Sharil Imam gained prominence during the 2019–2020 protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He was arrested in January 2020 and is under judicial supervision. His name was also mentioned in the case of violence that occurred at Jamia in December 2019. A decision on the charges against him and in this case is expected to be delivered by the courts.
