Sunny Deol is preparing for the release of his new film 'Surya: Ant se Aarambh Tak,' which is scheduled for next month. A teaser for the movie was previously released, in which Sunny plays a father deeply traumatized by the death of his daughter and concerned about malpractice in the medical field.
The film portrays doctors in an extremely negative light, which has caused strong indignation from the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
The IMA sent a letter to the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, demanding an impartial review of the film's content. The association also requested the ability to ban the film if necessary.
Following the IMA's objections, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) clarified that the film had not yet been submitted for certification. Currently, the CBFC has not seen it nor issued any release permits.
According to the IMA, based on the teasers and promotional materials shown in the film, corruption and illegal actions are widespread in the medical sector. The association objects to the idea that the mistakes of a few individuals are being attributed to all medical personnel.
The IMA emphasized that if a doctor makes a mistake or shows negligence during treatment, legal and disciplinary measures should be taken against them. However, in their view, the errors of some doctors should not tarnish the reputation of all doctors who honestly treat patients and save lives.
The association stated that it does not support illegal actions in the medical profession but finds it unacceptable to portray the entire profession negatively based on a single case.
The scene where Sunny Deol demonstrates physical violence against doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff is of greatest concern. The association warns that if such violence is depicted as an act of heroism or the right course of action, it could convey a false message to viewers.
According to the IMA report, doctors and other healthcare workers across the country already face numerous safety issues in hospitals. Therefore, if films justify attacks on them, it could fuel hatred and violence against medical personnel.
The IMA believes that attacks on doctors and healthcare workers who save people's lives can never be justified under any circumstances. The association sent a letter to the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, with three main demands.
Firstly, to conduct an independent examination of the film to assess how the medical profession is portrayed. Secondly, to make necessary changes to the film, requiring corrections to generalizations about doctors and scenes of violence against medical workers. And thirdly, to consider banning the film if necessary.
If the film's content is deemed illegal, the government must consider a ban or take other appropriate measures. Nevertheless, no official decision regarding a ban has been announced yet.
In addition to Sunny Deol, Ravi Kishan, Pranjna Jaiswal, Tanushree Chakraborty, Manish Vadхва, Tinu Anand, Virti Vagani, Jishu Sengupta, Khalid Siddiqui, Anup Trivedi, and Rohit Tiwari will also star in the film. The premiere of the film is scheduled for November 20, 2026.
