Five Indian bowlers conceded over 40 runs in a T20I match in Christchurch for the first time

In the first match of the five-match T20 series against New Zealand, the performance of the Indian bowlers proved extremely disappointing. In the game held on October 22nd at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the hosts, New Zealand, scored 225 runs, winning by 8 wickets.

This match marked the first in T20 International history where five Indian bowlers collectively conceded 40 or more runs in a single innings. Axar Patel gave away 51 runs in four overs, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceded 49 runs. Arshdeep Singh gave away 45 runs, while Mayank Yadav and Nitish Kumar Reddy each spent 40 runs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was returning to international cricket after approximately four years, but he failed to make a significant impact. The weaknesses of the Indian batting lineup became evident due to the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.

New Zealand started strongly thanks to Finn Allen, who scored 45 runs off 24 balls. Tim Seifert added 24 runs from 17 balls, and Glenn Phillips delivered the strongest blow to the Indian bowlers, scoring 82 runs without being dismissed off 40 balls. Benjamin Jacks also accelerated the pace of the game, contributing a quick half-century with 31 runs off 16 balls.

At the beginning of the innings, New Zealand reached 65 runs for the loss of one wicket. The Indian bowlers were unable to capitalize on the initial swing of the ball and struggled with constant prevention of boundaries. In the last five overs, the hosts added 67 runs, bringing the total score to 225.

This score was the highest joint score by New Zealand against India in T20 International, as well as the best score for New Zealand at home in T20 International. Nevertheless, the Indian team successfully chased the target of 226 runs, finishing the chase two balls before the end of the match. This was the first instance in T20 International where the Indian team successfully achieved such a large target.

Critic outraged by Shamir Joseph's bowling tactics against Arshdeep Singh in India vs West Indies match

In the fourth T20 match between India and West Indies, held in Hyderabad on Wednesday (October 14), the bowling tactics of West Indies bowler Shamir Joseph caused significant controversy. West Indies won the match by 24 runs, leveling the series at 2-2.

Sriwats Goswami, a former cricketer from Bengal, expressed dissatisfaction with Joseph's actions in the final over against Arshdeep Singh. He stated that instead of targeting Arshdeep Singh's body, Joseph should have bowled to the stumps, especially when India's chances of winning were virtually gone.

India needed to score 35 runs in the last over while having only one remaining batting wicket. Arshdeep Singh was batting, and Maink Yadav was at the opposite end. Under these conditions, a West Indies victory was considered highly probable. Shamir Joseph used short balls against Arshdeep in this over; one such delivery hit the Indian fast bowler's shoulder and arm, causing Arshdeep to fall on the field and requiring a physiotherapist.

After a short break, Arshdeep Singh resumed play, but Joseph continued to use short deliveries. Following this, India's captain, Shreyas Iyer, indicated that Arshdeep should be declared injured, thus ending the Indian innings. Goswami reiterated his indignation regarding Joseph's conduct, writing: 'What Shamir Joseph did on the last three balls against Arshdeep contradicts the spirit of sportsmanship.'

Sriwats Goswami acknowledged that international cricket is an extremely competitive sport, but in his opinion, the bowler always had another option in such a situation. He emphasized that Joseph could have bowled to the stumps instead of constantly aiming short balls at the batsman's body. His comments drew attention to Joseph's strategy in the final over, although this remains Goswami's personal opinion.

Overall, West Indies, having lost the toss and batting first, scored 247 runs, losing three wickets. In response, the Indian team managed to reach 223 runs but ultimately lost the match by 24 runs. This victory allowed the visiting team to level the series at 2-2. Shamir Joseph is known for his fast bowling and regularly bowls at speeds exceeding 140 kilometers per hour.

India plans squad changes for Indore T20 match; possible team lineup

The third match of the five-match T20 tournament between India and West Indies will take place on October 11th at Holkar Stadium in Indore. The game is scheduled to start at 19:00 Indian time. This match could be decisive for the series, which has reached a tense point.

After the second T20, which ended with West Indies defeating India by 6 wickets, the series is tied at 1-1. The team, led by Shreyas Iyer, aims to win the upcoming confrontation.

The debut of 15-year-old young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi at home ground is also being actively discussed, but his participation seems unlikely for now. Head coach Gautam Gambhir previously stated after the second T20 that the team might make adjustments to the middle order depending on circumstances, while wanting to maintain stability in the top order. Therefore, it is likely difficult to rule out the duo of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who are currently in good form, and the management will likely give them more opportunities. This means Vaibhav will have to wait.

Regarding the squad, Indian players who played in Ranchi were unable to effectively contain the aggressive batsmen of the West Indies. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Naman Diar proved very costly in the match. In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav are expected to retain their positions. However, Shivam Dube's performance in the second T20 was not outstanding, so there is a possibility of including Nitish Kumar Reddy instead of him in the starting XI. Nevertheless, the final decision will be made considering the pitch conditions and team strategy.

For their part, the West Indies team under the leadership of Guy Holder may refrain from significant changes to their starting lineup after the victory. In Ranchi, the team scored 250 runs, leaving nine wickets in hand. The brilliant play of Guy Holder and Sherfane Rutherford exposed weaknesses in the Indian bowling. The task for the West Indies is to maintain this aggressive momentum. Thus, for India, the challenge is not only to score a high total in attack but also to demonstrate better control in defense.

A possible Indian lineup for the third T20 includes: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (as wicketkeeper-batsman), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Verma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Diar, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mayank Yadav.

The projected West Indies lineup for the third T20: Guy Holder (captain/wicketkeeper-batsman), Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Romario Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Romario Shepherd, Gudakesh Motie, Shar Springer, Akil Hussain, and Shar Joseph.

The Indian squad includes: Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (as wicketkeeper-batsman), Shreyas Iyer (captain), Ishan Kishan, Tilak Verma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Diar, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, and Kuldeep Yadav.
