Scientific Aspects of Human Survival Inside a Whale's Stomach, Using the Film Whalefall as an Example

The film Whalefall depicts the story of a young man who ends up inside a sperm whale's belly. Afterward, he tries to find a way to save his life and escape. This film was released on October 16, 2026, and Austin Abrams played the role of Jay Gardiner. According to the plot, Jay was scuba diving when he fell into the mouth of a large sperm whale. The film is based on a novel by Daniel Cross, published in 2023.

However, the question arises: is it possible for a person to survive inside a whale in real life? Can a whale completely swallow a human? According to scientists, such a phenomenon is extremely rare. Even if a person manages to get inside a whale, survival there would be extremely difficult due to the pressure inside the abdomen, acidity, and breathing problems.

A sperm whale is a large toothed marine mammal that inhabits the ocean and hunts in deep waters. According to NOAA data, the sperm whale primarily feeds on squid and other marine animals. It dives to significant depths in search of food.

Scientists note that a very large sperm whale might have a wide enough mouth for a person to end up inside. Nevertheless, this does not mean that whales usually eat humans. To date, no credible case has been recorded where a whale has completely swallowed a human, so the event shown in the film cannot be considered a common occurrence in real life.

The sperm whale's stomach consists of four parts, each performing its own function. In the first part of the stomach, muscles break down food. Then, in the second part, food is digested with acid. If a person finds themselves in a whale's stomach, they face numerous dangers. Pressure from the muscular wall can injure the body, and the acid in the stomach can also harm the body, making survival extremely difficult for a human.

In the film, Jay has diving equipment that helps him breathe for some time. However, in real life, having only an oxygen tank does not guarantee salvation. The person will still face threats arising from the pressure and acid inside the abdomen.

According to scientist Joy Rydenberg, if a diver is wearing a suit that protects the body from liquids, the effect of acid on covered parts of the body can be reduced. However, exposed parts of the body may be affected. Furthermore, breathing and remaining safe inside a whale's belly would remain extremely difficult.

The term 'Whale Fall' is used when a dead whale sinks to the ocean depths. In this state, the whale's body becomes a food source for many marine organisms. Small creatures and other sea animals obtain nutrients from it, which can contribute to the formation of a unique community of living organisms at great depths.

Although the story presented in the film Whalefall is captivating, surviving inside a whale's stomach is practically impossible in reality. No case of a whale completely swallowing a human has been documented so far, so this story should be regarded as fictional.

Review of 'Whalefall': A Story of Human Survival Inside a Whale, Touching on Themes of Family and Ecology

The film 'Whalefall' goes beyond simple action or thriller; it is a narrative about the family bonds between a father and son, the vast ocean ecosystem, and the human struggle. Austin Abrams brilliantly played Jay, while Josh Brolin embodied the character of Mitch—a strict yet loving father. Director Brian Duffield brought Daniel Cross's novel to the screen. The movie runs for approximately 106 minutes.

The story begins on the beaches of Monterey, California. Jay's father, Mitch, was a renowned diver. Disagreements always existed between them: the father was strict and expected his son to follow in his footsteps, whereas the son sought to forge his own path. A year after his father's death, Jay dives into the sea to find his remains. Suddenly, a giant humpback whale swallows him, and a fight for survival begins within an hour, based on the oxygen supply in the animal's stomach.

The strongest aspect of the film is the bond between the father and son. Flashbacks show Mitch teaching Jay everything related to the sea—diving, marine life—but he did so very strictly, scolding him for mistakes. Jay felt that his father did not understand him. However, once inside the whale, Jay realizes that all his father's lessons proved useful.

He applies knowledge about breath-holding, equipment use, and overcoming fear. In the end, Jay begins to believe that his father's spirit lives within the whale. This scene is extremely emotionally powerful. Relationships can be complex and full of contradictions, but love and acquired knowledge always remain with a person.

The film not only tells a story but also imparts a lesson about the necessity of saving whales. Humpback whales are a vital part of the marine ecosystem because they consume large squid and maintain the balance of the deep ocean. When a whale dies, its body sinks to the bottom, a phenomenon called 'whalefall.' This provides food and shelter for small organisms for hundreds of years, forming an entirely new ecosystem.

Humans endanger whales due to plastic pollution, ship collisions, overfishing, and climate change. The film demonstrates that whales are living beings with their own lives. To save them, we must clean the seas, reduce plastic use, keep ships away from whale migration routes, and strictly enforce international laws. By saving whales, we save the ocean, and by saving the ocean, we save the planet.

Jay's struggle inside the whale presents scientific interest. The acids in the stomach, the pressure, and the lack of oxygen—all appear realistic. The filmmakers consulted with whale anatomists. Jay finds a way out using his knowledge and memories of his father. This underscores how powerful science and human will can be. The desire to achieve something keeps Jay alive; he fights not only for his own survival but also for reconciliation with his father.

Although some moments in 'Whalefall' might seem overly emotional, overall it is a captivating and thought-provoking film. The visual effects are magnificent. The experience of being inside a whale is simultaneously claustrophobic and thrilling. Even an ordinary viewer can grasp its message. The film reminds us that family, nature, and inner struggle are part of life. If you love stories about the sea, relationships, and survival, be sure to watch 'Whalefall'; it is not just a movie, it is an entire experience.
