South African award-winner and actress Dawn Thandeka King will star as the lead in the upcoming Mzansi Magic series titled 'Inyosi'. This thirteen-episode project will explore themes of power struggles within a family, cultural expectations, and an old secret that affects generations.
King, known for her roles in popular local productions such as 'Shaka iLembe' and 'Diep City', takes on the role of Mabonzi Mageza-Ngcobo. She portrays a successful businesswoman and widow whose drive to secure a better future for herself and her family is tied to a complex past.
The cast also includes Thembsie Matu, Kwenzo Ngcobo, and newcomer Kethukuthula Jele, who makes his television debut in this role.
In 'Inyosi', King plays Mabonzi, the CEO of Ekhaya Events and Catering, and a devoted mother to her three children: Nsiki, played by Kwanele Mkhize; Kwanele, played by Toka Mtabane; and Samukelo, played by Nandipa Khubone.
Despite Mabonzi's business success, her company's future is threatened, which could disrupt family harmony. As the possibility of succession becomes apparent, her children begin to compete to prove their worth in managing the business, creating tension around ambition, power, and maternal legacy.
However, the family's internal issues are only part of Mabonzi's story. Her past holds a secret that could have far-reaching consequences for those who follow her.
Thirty years ago, Mabonzi's life changed drastically when she visited Bheki, a man she loved, with her family to tell him she was pregnant. Instead of claiming the child, Bheki stated he intended to marry another woman whom he considered pure and untainted.
This rejection was particularly painful for Mabonzi, who had participated in Umhlanga—a traditional rite of passage where young women learn cultural values through singing, dancing, and mentorship. Her humiliation was compounded when the young women she was undergoing the ceremony with turned away from her.
Desperately wanting to win back her lover and change her situation, Mabonzi sought help from Sunday Nkabinde, a powerful spiritual healer played by Zahele Msibi. Sunday is known to viewers from the series 'Isibaya'. Initially, she approached him to find umuti wenkhlanla to bring Bheki back. However, Sunday offered her isthwala, promising to change her destiny.
Mabonzi agreed, unaware that this decision would lead to consequences beyond her own life.
Mabonzi's past secret begins to unravel through Buble, played by Jele, who joins the production as a newcomer on Mzansi Magic. Buble starts investigating the origin of a distinctive honey mark on her back, which is linked to an old secret about to surface.
As the plot develops, the series raises questions about the cost of ambition, the weight of cultural expectations, and the consequences of choices made in moments of desperation. What exactly did Mabonzi agree to do, and what sacrifices will she have to make in pursuit of wealth, dignity, and a life free from poverty and humiliation?
With King at the center of the narrative, 'Inyosi' combines family conflict, spiritual mystery, and the struggle to protect a legacy while confronting the secrets that shaped it. The premiere of 'Inyosi' will air on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161) on Monday, November 2nd, at 8:00 PM.
