Optivolt raises $32 million to develop intelligent solar technologies

Optivolt has successfully raised $32 million in a Series A funding round to advance its intelligent solar technologies. The investment round was led by VXI Capital, with participation from RA Capital, Valo Ventures, and Atlas Innovate. This infusion brings the company's total raised capital to $42 million.

Optivolt was founded by Rohit Kalyandpur and develops power electronics technologies designed to boost the performance of solar panels. The company's product helps compensate for energy losses that occur when traditional panels operate in real-world conditions.

The new funding is planned to be used for expanding production capacity and entering new solar energy markets. The company has already supplied over 20,000 panels equipped with its Power Balancer technology. Optivolt's ambitions cover both residential installations and large-scale projects, including solar systems that help meet the growing electricity demands of artificial intelligence data centers.

The investments demonstrate interest in tools that improve existing renewable energy technologies. Although solar panels have become cheaper, they do not always deliver expected efficiency outside of laboratory settings. Optivolt aims to change this situation with electronics integrated into the panel.

Standard solar panels can lose output power if individual cells are affected by shading, dirt, or degradation. Under certain circumstances, one group of low-performing cells can limit the overall power output of a larger section. Furthermore, traditional bypass diodes can exclude damaged groups from the generation process.

Optivolt's Power Balancer technology solves this problem by managing energy between cell groups in real time. The system reacts to changing conditions rather than relying solely on the passive architecture of the panel. This approach aims to recover energy that traditional systems might otherwise lose.

Additionally, the technology includes monitoring and rapid shutdown features directly within the panel. According to Optivolt, this could reduce the need for separate optimizers, microinverters, and rapid shutdown devices. Fewer additional components simplify system design and installation.

With the funds secured in the Series A round, the company intends to scale up production. The company's goal is to make its technology accessible for various sizes of solar installations. Increased production capacity will help meet demand from both private consumers and large users.

The firm reports having 19 granted patents and 27 patent applications. Three certifications have been obtained for the sealed enclosure with an integrated connection block, integrated panel electronics, as well as for rapid shutdown and solar module safety.

Internal testing by Optivolt showed that panels using its technology generated up to six times more power compared to panels with external optimizers under specific shading conditions. It should be noted that this figure relates to specific test conditions and does not necessarily reflect increased performance in all installations.

The expansion of AI infrastructure increases focus on reliability and power generation. Data centers require significant amounts of energy, which opens opportunities for technologies that enhance renewable energy output. Optivolt believes its method can improve the economic efficiency of solar projects throughout their lifespan, as recovering more energy from installed panels increases generation without requiring a proportional increase in panel capacity.

VXI Capital's investment supports the company's plan to scale beyond current deployments. However, wider adoption will depend on production growth, operational performance, and economic viability for customers. The company needs to demonstrate consistent advantages across different environments and installation types.

Stand raises $70 million at a $1 billion valuation

Stand successfully raised $70 million in a Series C funding round, achieving a valuation of $1 billion. The leadership of this round included Saga Ventures, with participation from Lowercarbon, Eclipse, Equal Ventures, Inspired Capital, Neotribe, and Jackson Square Ventures.

The company develops a new method for insuring property in regions prone to natural disasters. Its platform integrates physical risk modeling, home improvements, and insurance coverage. The goal is to help homeowners reduce disaster risks and obtain more affordable insurance premiums.

Stand currently insures assets worth over $10 billion, representing growth from $1 billion the previous year. The company has focused its efforts on wildfire risks in California and hurricane threats in Florida. Unlike traditional insurers, which rely on historical losses and general geographic risk assessments, Stand assesses each individual property to understand its specific vulnerabilities.

Stand's approach is based on the patented Stand World Model. This software simulates how each home behaves during a natural event, taking into account details such as building materials, trees and shrubs, local climate, and other property characteristics. The system identifies weak points and suggests practical measures to reduce the likelihood of impact.

With this knowledge, homeowners can determine which improvements will provide the most significant protection. Stand also assists clients in implementing the suggested improvements. The company reports that qualified homeowners can receive premium discounts of up to 70 percent. Stand simplifies this process by matching clients with reliable service providers, aiming to make insurance pricing more reflective of actual resilience.

In line with its scaling plans, Stand announced the appointment of two senior executives. Drew Saad joined as President of Property and Casualty Insurance. Previously, he served as Chief Underwriter at PURE Insurance. Saad will contribute to expanding the company's insurance operations and underwriting capabilities, leveraging his experience managing underwriting at a specialized insurer for high-net-worth clients.

Tony Landy took the role of Chief Financial Officer. Before this position, he led strategic growth at Nephila, one of the world's leading catastrophe reinsurance investment managers. He also held leadership roles at Everest Re and Openly. His experience is particularly valuable as Stand raises funds to support its growing portfolio of insurance businesses. These appointments underscore the need to combine an innovative approach to risk with robust insurance operations.

Stand's strategy addresses the increasing pressure on homeowners in disaster zones. Rising losses and unstable pricing have made obtaining property insurance difficult. Some homeowners face policy non-renewal even after implementing mitigation measures. Stand aims to encourage resilience through property-specific modeling and offering insurance discounts. This allows homeowners to see how investments in physical measures affect their risk, and insurers to gain a more detailed tool for assessing individual properties.
