The Orlando Pirates team, current champions of the Betway Premiership, is preparing to participate in the South African Fashion Week (SAFW). This event will take place on Saturday, October 24th, at The Forum in Hyde Park Corner, Johannesburg.
The Pirates had previously hinted at their appearance at the country's premier event for style and luxury enthusiasts. SAFW is held twice a year in Johannesburg and brings together both established brands and emerging talents to showcase lookbooks for the upcoming 2027 season.
Orlando Pirates club has a history of supporting the creative side. Renowned South African designer Thebe Magugu previously collaborated with the kit sponsor Adidas, creating the team's home and away kits for the 2023/24 season, blending high-end street fashion with football culture.
In honor of the club's name, 'The Ghost,' the home kit was designed in traditional black and white tones featuring a prominent skull and bones on the front. The away kit, rendered in a vibrant pistachio green, included Thebe Magugu's individual signature on the nape and an elevated crest, along with a reversible bucket hat for added versatility.
According to the SAFW website, the show featuring the Buccaneers is titled 'Field to Fashion' and will be the penultimate show of the season. The event promises to bring vibrant energy to the runway, uniting athletes with leading South African stylists and designers such as Neo Serati, David Tlale, Good Good Good, and Yona.
The website stated: 'Sport has always been dressed. Arrival, tunnel walk, post-match interviews, and stands have become scenes in themselves, and what is worn on them shapes how South Africans dress far beyond ninety minutes. Field to Fashion takes this instinct and passes it on to South African designers, and leading stylists create individual looks that transfer personal style from the field.'
However, it is unlikely that the Pirates' first-team players will swap football boots for the runway, as the squad is currently preparing for the CAF Champions League match against African Stars on Friday evening. The Pirates enter this fixture with a slight advantage after defeating the Namibian team 1-0 last week. Qualification for the tournament group stage is quite achievable, provided the hosts do not allow opponents to score.
Nevertheless, as in football, anything is possible. It would be a real treat for both fashion lovers and football fans to see players like Oswin Appollis showcasing themselves on the runway.
