Technology from Xinjiang Doubles Cotton Yield in Uzbekistan

The President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, inspected the application of cotton cultivation technology from Xinjiang on fields operated by the 'Kashkadaryo Jinggu' company in the Guzar district of the Kashkadarya region.

This technology is being applied across an area of 2200 hectares and combines plastic film mulching with drip irrigation. This allows for water and fertilizer savings while also accelerating crop maturation.

Cotton seeds are sown in alternating rows under plastic film, with all irrigation provided through a drip system. The film helps retain heat and moisture in the soil, which stimulates early and uniform germination. Water and fertilizers are delivered directly to the plant roots.

According to the data presented, implementing this technology reduces water consumption by 30–40% and fertilizer use by almost 30%. Furthermore, the cotton ripens 10–15 days earlier than with traditional cultivation methods.

During his visit, Mirziyoyev checked the plantings and the organization of field work. With traditional farming, the yield is 30–35 centners of cotton per hectare, whereas using the Xinjiang technology makes it possible to achieve a yield of 60–70 centners per hectare. At the 'Kashkadaryo Jinggu' enterprise, the current yield reaches 55 centners per hectare, and the total production volume is 12,300 tons.

The enterprise also uses agricultural drones for field operations. Their application helps speed up certain agricultural processes and reduce fuel consumption.

'Kashkadaryo Jinggu' is an agricultural cluster established with Chinese investment. Its activities cover 18,300 hectares in the districts of Kasansay, Nishan, Guzar, Kukdala, and Mirishkor. A significant portion of this land was previously undeveloped desert areas and abandoned fields.

The project attracted investments of 128 million US dollars and provided employment for 50 people. The company's product exports are valued at 8.5 million US dollars.

During the visit, the president also received a report on agricultural activities in the Kashkadarya region.

Uzbekistan harvested 4.63 million tons of cotton, exceeding the planned target

The Ministry of Agriculture reported that as of October 22, 2026, Uzbekistan has harvested 4.63 million tons of cotton, reaching 103% of the planned volume.

Of the total harvest of 3,515,597 tons, it was collected using nearly 3,000 modern cotton harvesting combines.

In the country, the average level of mechanization in cotton harvesting reached 76%, while regional indicators varied from 61% to 98.5%.

The highest percentage of mechanization was recorded in the Jizzakh region, where machinery harvested 98.5% of the cotton crop. In the Syrdarya region, this figure was 94.2%, and in the Tashkent region—81.2%.

Cotton harvesting continues across the country; initial collection is taking place over an area exceeding 49,000 hectares. The Ministry emphasized that special attention is being paid to preventing crop losses.

The Ministry attributes the positive results of the season to the implementation of priorities set by the president in the field of agricultural development, the introduction of modern agrarian technologies, and the application of scientific achievements.

Furthermore, throughout the year, practical seminars were held in all regions where cotton is grown, and scientific recommendations and best practices developed by cotton researchers were integrated into production processes.

Over 75% of cotton in Uzbekistan harvested using agricultural machinery

As of October 12, 76% of the planned volume of cotton under contracts for the current year has been harvested in Uzbekistan. Of the total volume of 3.4 million tons of raw material collected, 2.6 million tons were removed using mechanized equipment, while the remaining portion was gathered manually.

A large share of the harvest was obtained thanks to machinery: cotton harvesting machines accounted for the collection of about 75% of the entire crop. Manual labor remained indispensable in areas where machinery could not reach. Of the total volume collected manually, 174 thousand tons came from the periphery of fields prepared for machine operation, and another 674 thousand tons were collected from small plots inaccessible to machinery.

This season, approximately 3 thousand high-efficiency cotton harvesters are operating in the fields. Furthermore, this year, over a thousand new machines have been leased to farms and agro-clusters.

The use of machinery facilitates prompt harvesting within the most suitable timeframes. For example, on October 12, machines helped collect 147 thousand tons of cotton, with the average productivity of one machine being about 50 tons per day.

Currently, the harvest campaign has reached one of its most intensive periods. Farmers need to complete the collection of the remaining harvest and fulfill their contractual obligations before the end of the season.

Previously, a list of agricultural products subject to a zero VAT rate was approved in Uzbekistan. This list included 516 items, but cotton and grain were excluded from it.
