Uber introduces feature to assist in the boarding of elderly and people with disabilities

Uber has implemented a new feature called Pickup Preferences, designed to simplify the boarding process for the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

This new functionality allows users to pre-configure how the driver should communicate their arrival at the meeting point and what details can help identify the passenger. The implementation of this feature will occur gradually in all regions of Brazil in the coming days.

Thanks to this tool, customers will no longer need to send individual messages for each ride to detail their notification preferences or mention the use of assistive devices, such as canes, crutches, and wheelchairs.

The system offers four distinct signaling modes to notify the driver about the vehicle's arrival. Additionally, it is possible to register specific characteristics that facilitate user recognition at the boarding location, including wearing sunglasses, a white cane, a regular cane, crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair.

These preference settings can be adjusted directly within the app by following a specific path in the program. According to the company, the development of this novelty aims to make the boarding experience more adaptable and individualized, taking into account the specific needs of the elderly and people with disabilities.

Araceli Almeida, head of Uber's Safety Operations in Brazil, stated: 'We understand the unique challenges that passengers with disabilities and the elderly face every day. That is why we continue to create new functionalities to provide a better and more personalized experience to our users.'

In addition to Pickup Preferences, the app already has other tools focused on accessibility. Uber also announced that it maintains a dedicated support channel for accessibility issues. In collaboration with Me Too Brasil, the company provides psychological support services and reinforces its commitment to not tolerate any type of discriminatory behavior during rides.
