Akash Ambani discusses Jio's plans to launch satellite communication in India

In the context of news regarding the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Jio Platforms, the company's Managing Director, Akash Ambani, provided important information. He noted that approximately 99 percent of India's population has access to telecommunication services. In the near future, satellite communication will benefit remote areas, the sea, and during air travel in India.

In an interview with Business Standard, Akash Ambani stated that Jio's mission is to connect every Indian to digital life. The company's goal is to ensure high quality and the most affordable price for connectivity everywhere and for everything.

Ambani reported in his interview that his company is evaluating the possibility of developing its own sovereign Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation for India, as well as considering partnership options.

When asked about the launch timeline, Ambani emphasized that the timeframe depends on numerous factors, including technological development and obtaining necessary permissions. Therefore, it is currently impossible to state exact dates.

Recent statements by Elon Musk have sparked debate. He posted on the social media platform X, expressing doubt that the launch of the Starlink service in India is intentionally delayed, and mentioned Ambani's name.

The Indian government issued a statement that licenses for satellite communication (SATCOM) have already been granted to three companies, among which are Starlink and Jio.

Reliance also commented on the social media platform X, stating its readiness to compete. However, specific timelines for the launch of satellite services in India have not yet been announced.

Before all three companies can commence operations in India after receiving all approvals, they must undergo a security vetting phase, followed by an auction for frequency spectrum allocation.
