Aden McCarthy scored debut Champions League goal against Dortmund in match with Sabah FC

Former Kaiser Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy made his mark on the European stage on Tuesday evening by scoring his first Champions League goal during the match where Azerbaijani champion Sabah FC hosted Borussia Dortmund.

Six minutes before halftime in Baku, the 22-year-old player bypassed the Dortmund defense and directed the ball into the net from a free kick, equalizing the score and reaching a significant personal milestone after only his third appearance in the tournament.

Although Serhu Girassy's second goal in the second half ultimately secured the victory for the German giants with a score of 2-1, McCarthy's individual performance demonstrated his rapid development since leaving 'Naturana'.

The young central defender, son of former 'Bafana Bafana' defender Fabian McCarthy, has quickly transformed from a local talent into a serious opponent for elite teams.

In addition to the goal in the first half, McCarthy made an important block at the goal line, preventing Girassy from scoring a third goal, thereby keeping his team in the attacking zone until the final whistle.

Since moving from Soweto to Azerbaijan, McCarthy has become a pillar of Sabah's defense. He has played in all home matches this season, helping the team remain at the top of the table while successfully adapting to the higher tempo and physical demands of European matches.

Following an impressive clean sheet against Slavia Prague earlier in the tournament, McCarthy's performance against former Champions League finalists was another important step in his career, which will undoubtedly attract the attention of 'Bafana Bafana' scouts back home.
