Wednesday Weather Forecast: Heat, Wind, High Fire Risk, and Rainfall in South Africa

South Africa is bracing for a mixed weather pattern on Wednesday, characterized by heat, wind, and rain. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of an extremely high risk of fires in several regions, as well as persistent high temperatures in some parts of Limpopo.

While much of the country can expect favorable and warm or hot conditions, scattered showers and rain are forecast for the Western Cape's southwest. Isolated precipitation is also possible in parts of the Eastern Cape.

What to Expect on Wednesday

SAWS published a regional forecast on Tuesday, detailing the expected weather conditions.

Heatwave Conditions

SAWS issued a heatwave warning stating that high temperatures will persist in some areas of West Bushveld, Limpopo, until October 23. This province is expected to have clear, warm, or hot weather, which will become very hot in some places. Cloudy patches and fog are expected over the south-central areas. In Gauteng, the weather will be clear and warm, although it will be hot in the far north. Mpumalanga is also expected to have clear and warm weather, with hot conditions in some parts of Lowveld. Morning cloudiness and fog are forecast along the eastern escarpment.

Extremely High Fire Risk in Several Regions

SAWS has warned of an extremely high fire risk in the following locations: Central Karoo in the Western Cape, most of the North West, southern parts of the Northern Cape, Mafubhe Municipality in the Free State, some areas in southern Limpopo, and northwestern Mpumalanga. Residents in these areas are strongly advised to remain vigilant due to the increased fire danger.

Rain Expected in the Western Cape

The northeast of the Western Cape is expected to have partly cloudy skies, while the rest will be cloudy and cool or warm. SAWS forecasts scattered showers and rain over the southwestern parts of the province, with isolated precipitation possible in the adjacent inland region and along the southern coast. Winds along the coast will be moderate or fresh, blowing from the northwest, weakening in the southwest. Fresh or strong westerly or southwesterly winds are expected elsewhere.

Windy and Warm Conditions in the Interior

Regarding wind, the Northern Cape will be clear, windy, and cool or warm, with partial cloudiness in the south and west, and cloudiness in the southwest. Clear, windy, and warm or hot weather is forecast for the North West and Free State. The Eastern Cape will be partly cloudy and cool or warm in the western half, and partly cloudy and warm in the eastern half. Isolated showers and rain are possible in the southwestern parts of both regions. Fresh or strong southwesterly winds are expected along the coast.

Hot Weather in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is forecast to have partly cloudy skies with morning fog in the northern inland region. Otherwise, the weather will be clear and warm or hot, becoming very hot in some places in the northeast. Moderate or fresh southerly or southwesterly winds are expected along the coast. SAWS predicts an extreme UVB sunburn index for KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday. A high UVB index is also predicted for Gauteng and a moderate one for the Western Cape. Residents should take precautions when spending time outdoors, especially in KwaZulu-Natal, where the extreme UV index indicates an increased risk of sunburn.

Warnings and Advice

Extremely High Fire Risk: Expected in specified parts of the Western Cape, North West, Northern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga on Wednesday. Heatwave Warning: Persistent high temperatures are expected in some areas of West Bushveld, Limpopo, until October 23. Impact-based warnings: SAWS did not issue impact-based warnings in its forecast.

Severe heat and high risk of wildfires expected in some provinces of the country

Residents of South Africa can expect hot or very hot weather in several provinces on Friday. A heatwave is forecast to persist in parts of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga, along with an extremely high fire danger level across large areas of the country.

The South African Weather Service has warned of prolonged high temperatures in certain areas of the Eastern Cape until Saturday, in northern KwaZulu-Natal until Sunday, and in Mpumalanga (excluding areas along the Escarpment) until Monday.

The forecast for Friday, October 16, also indicates isolated showers and thunderstorms in some parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West Province, and the Free State, although good and hot weather is expected in most places.

SAWS has warned that extremely high fire danger is expected across most of the Northern Cape, eastern parts of the Western Cape, in some parts of the Eastern Cape, western Free State, northern KwaZulu-Natal, southeastern Mpumalanga, as well as in the northern and western parts of Limpopo.

Gauteng prepares for hot climate and isolated thunderstorms

Variable cloudiness and warm weather with isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in Gauteng. Temperatures will be higher in the northernmost parts of the province. A high sunburn index is expected, and residents are advised to take precautions against prolonged sun exposure.

The North West Province and the Free State are forecast to be clear and hot, transitioning to variable cloudiness in the afternoon, with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible in their easternmost parts.

Heatwave persists in Mpumalanga and Limpopo

Clear and warm or hot weather is expected in Mpumalanga, transitioning to variable cloudiness over Highveld in the afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms are possible in the southwestern parts of the province. It is expected to be very hot in some Lowveld areas, and the heatwave warning remains in effect until Monday in some parts of the province, except for areas along the Escarpment.

Limpopo is forecast to have clear and warm or very hot weather, with variable cloudiness and isolated afternoon thunderstorms in the southwestern areas. Extremely high fire danger is also expected in the northern and western parts of Limpopo.

Northern Cape faces extreme fire danger

Clear weather is expected in the central parts of the Northern Cape, while the rest of the province will experience variable cloudiness and warm or very hot weather. Some western areas will be cool or warm, and the east will be windy. SAWS has warned of extremely high fire danger across most of the province. Residents are strongly urged to exercise caution, especially in areas where hot, dry, and windy conditions can promote the rapid spread of wildfires.

Western Cape to face scorching temperatures inland

In the Western Cape, fog is expected in some places in the morning on the west, which will give way to variable cloudiness and warm or hot weather. However, in some eastern parts of the province, temperatures are expected to reach very hot or extremely hot levels. Conditions will be cool along the southwest coast and adjacent inland areas. Fresh or strong northwesterly winds are expected along the west and southwest coasts, while a moderate southerly wind is forecast along the south coast. The sunburn index is expected to be very high.

Eastern Cape to face heat and uncomfortable humidity

Morning fog is expected in some parts of the Eastern Cape, especially south of the Escarpment and along the coast, before the weather becomes clear and warm or hot. In some areas in the interior of the western half of the province, temperatures will be very high, while the eastern half, south of the Escarpment, will also experience very hot conditions. The province is under a heatwave warning, with prolonged high temperatures expected in the areas of Chris Hani, O.R. Tambo, and Alfred Nzo municipalities until Saturday. Extremely uncomfortable and humid conditions are expected in some places. Light to moderate northeasterly winds are expected along the western half of the Eastern Cape coast, which will strengthen to fresh or strong southwesterly winds by evening. The eastern half of the province will experience a moderate or fresh northeasterly wind along the coast.

KwaZulu-Natal to face extreme UV exposure

KwaZulu-Natal is forecast to have variable cloudiness and warm or very hot weather with morning fog patches in the northeast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible in the far northwest, while southern parts of the province will be warm in some places. The heatwave warning remains in effect for some parts of northern KwaZulu-Natal until Sunday. Very hot or extremely hot and uncomfortable conditions are also expected in some eastern parts of the province. The sunburn index is expected to reach extreme levels, making sun protection particularly important. Light to moderate northerly or northeasterly winds are expected along the coast, strengthening to fresh during the day.

Residents advised to take precautions

Given the high temperatures expected in several provinces, residents are advised to maintain hydration, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, and take measures against sunburn. Those in areas with an extremely high fire danger warning should avoid activities that could trigger wildfires and remain vigilant about changing conditions.

Fog warning issued in South Africa's provinces, high fire risk remains in North Cape

The weather service issued a Level 2 yellow warning for reduced visibility in parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo on Thursday morning. Fog and low clouds are expected to complicate road conditions.

Drivers in parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo may encounter difficult driving conditions on Thursday morning due to low clouds and fog reducing visibility, while extremely high fire risks are forecast in some areas of the North Cape and Northwest.

The South African Meteorological Service has issued a Level 2 yellow warning for reduced visibility in affected areas of three northeastern provinces. This warning is in effect from midnight until 9:59 AM on Thursday.

According to the meteorological service, low cloud bases can significantly reduce visibility in isolated and foggy locations. It has been warned that such conditions may complicate travel, increasing the likelihood of traffic accidents and leading to longer journey times.

Fire Risk Threatens North Cape and Northwest

While drivers in the northeast face poor visibility, conditions with an extremely high fire risk are expected in some areas of the northeastern part of the North Cape and the Greater Tugela Municipality in the Northwest. As conditions favor rapid fire spread, residents in affected areas are advised to exercise caution.

Otherwise, the North Cape will be fair and warm or hot, although cooler conditions are expected in the west. In the afternoon, variable cloudiness and windy weather are forecast for the east.

In the Northwest, it will first be cloudy in the east, then the weather will become fair and warm or hot, with developing variable cloudiness in the afternoon.

Fog and Mist in Northeastern Provinces

Gauteng can expect variable cloudiness and warm weather on Thursday, along with a high ultraviolet solar radiation index. In Mpumalanga, cloudiness with possible mist is expected along the escarpment, and fog is forecast over the eastern Highveld in the morning. The rest of the province will have variable cloudiness and warm weather.

Limpopo will also experience cloudy conditions, with the possibility of mist and patches of morning fog along the escarpment before variable cloudiness and warm weather set in elsewhere. Precipitation forecasts indicate a 30% chance of isolated rainfall in some parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, while most of the country is expected to remain dry.

Warm Weather in Central South Africa

Free State will first be cloudy in the east, then become fair, windy, and warm. Variable cloudiness is expected to develop in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal will experience patches of morning fog over inland areas, followed by variable cloudiness and warm or hot weather. Coastal winds are expected to become moderate or fresh, blowing from east to northeast, and may strengthen occasionally north of Durban. The province will face an extreme ultraviolet solar radiation index.

Good Weather in Cape Provinces

The Western Cape is forecast to have fair and cool or warm weather, although variable cloudiness is expected along the southeast coast in the evening. The ultraviolet solar radiation index will be very high.

Morning fog is expected in some places over the interior of the western half of the Eastern Cape, after which fair and warm weather will settle in. The eastern half of the Eastern Cape will also experience morning fog in some places along the escarpment, followed by fair and warm weather.
