Central government employees are awaiting an increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for July. Earlier speculation suggested that the government might announce a DA hike during the Dasara festival, but this waiting period has been extended. Now, employees' attention is focused on the upcoming meeting of the Central Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where an important decision regarding the DA increase may be made.
Although the government has not yet provided any official signals regarding the size of the future allowance hike, various reports suggest the possibility of a 3% increase in DA.
As is known, the central government usually announces the DA increase for its employees and pensioners in September or October, effective from July. Consequently, an announcement before Dashahara was previously expected, but now employees hope the government might announce the DA hike before Diwali. The government has made no official comments regarding the date of the allowance increase announcement, the size of the DA/DR increase, or its effective date.
The announcement concerning the adjustment of DA/DR for central government employees and pensioners for July is expected to be made at the Central Cabinet meeting. This meeting may take place on Wednesday, and all are watching to see if the government can present any significant updates. It should be noted that in 2025, the DA hike, which took effect from July, was approved by the government on October 1, increasing DA by 3%, raising it from 55% to 58%. Furthermore, in 2026, the first DA rise occurred in January, bringing it to 60%.
According to reports, the government may increase DA/DR for central workers and pensioners by another 3% this time. If the forecast proves correct, DA will rise from 60% to 63%. It is important to understand that this is only a speculation, and the final DA increase will be determined by the government's decision and official order.
The speculation about a 3% DA increase is based on AICPI-IW data. The size of the allowance increase (DA) is directly linked to inflation figures. The decision on the DA increase is made based on the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) data. According to Bureau of Labor data, AICPI-IW rose by 1.2 points in August 2026, reaching 154.4. Based on current data, a DA increase of 3-4 percentage points for July 2026 is projected.
If the government increases DA by 3% as per forecasts, raising it from 60% to 63%, central government employees will receive additional income. An employee with a basic salary of 18,000 rupees will receive an additional 540 rupees monthly. With a basic salary of 25,000 rupees, the increase will be 750 rupees, 900 rupees for 30,000 rupees, and 1,200 rupees for 40,000 rupees. Similarly, the cost of living allowance received by pensioners will be subject to the same change.
