South African Weather Service issues warnings for damaging winds and waves in KwaZulu-Natal

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued Yellow Level 2 warnings concerning damaging winds and waves across sections of KwaZulu-Natal for Tuesday, October 20. These alerts caution about potential disruptions affecting beachfront activities, as well as operations at small harbors and ports.

The warnings are anticipated to impact the northern coast and the far north-eastern regions of the province, primarily during the morning hours. The weather service specified that the strong winds and waves along the north coast could lead to localized interruptions in beachside activities and at smaller ports and harbors.

Furthermore, a distinct advisory regarding damaging interior winds has been issued for the extreme north-eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. This specific warning points to risks such as localized damage to settlements, challenges for high-sided vehicles traversing vulnerable roads, and the possibility of uncontrolled fires.

Extremely high fire danger in three provinces

In addition to the coastal warnings, SAWS has alerted the public to conditions of extremely high fire danger in several areas, specifically parts of the Northern Cape, Western Cape, and North West.

The municipalities identified as being affected by this high fire risk include the Karoo Hoogland Local Municipality within the Northern Cape, the Central Karoo District Municipality in the Western Cape, and Moretele Local Municipality in the North West.

Local residents in these designated zones are advised to maintain vigilance regarding fire hazards and adhere strictly to the guidance provided by local fire safety authorities.
