There are annual periods when the vehicle's air conditioning system is little used, leading some drivers to go more than a month without turning on the unit. However, this inactivity can cause problems for the system's operation.
Even during winter, it is advisable to operate the car's air conditioning for brief moments to ensure the equipment's durability. This operation ensures that the compressor functions, allowing the oil and refrigerant gas to circulate through the component.
System Maintenance and Protection
In this way, the system receives internal lubrication, preventing the drying out of internal parts. The oil present in the compressor plays a crucial role in protecting these components. The parts most vulnerable to damage when the system is idle are the seals and the rubber hoses. The drying out of these parts can cause refrigerant gas leaks, which reduces the air conditioner's effectiveness in cooling the vehicle's interior.
Although there is no universally established guideline regarding the ideal frequency for preventive use of air conditioning in cold climates, the suggestion is to use it at least weekly, for approximately five minutes. This procedure also allows checking if the system is showing performance loss or if there is any unpleasant odor in the pipes, in addition to helping to reduce accumulated humidity.
Additionally, the cabin filter has a function that goes beyond cleaning the air while the air conditioning is active. Its purpose is to filter all elements that pass through the internal ventilation system, regardless of whether the user is using the heating or just the fan. Just like in hot months, this component requires regular inspection, as a saturated cabin filter compromises its capabilities and allows impurities to enter the ventilation system.
