According to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the transition or completion rate in basic education in Cape Verde fell to 84.1% in the 2023/2024 period. This figure represents the lowest point since the beginning of the historical series in 2014/2015.
The statistical report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicates that although Basic Education shows higher completion levels, these are on a declining trend. In contrast, Secondary Education demonstrates more modest gains and greater instability.
Specifically in basic education, the national completion rate dropped from 90.7% in 2014/2015 to the 84.1% observed in the last academic year analyzed. In secondary education, there was an evolution from 62.8% in 2014/2015 to 64.7% in 2023/2024; however, the two most recent academic years indicate a decline.
At this level of secondary education, the rate had already reached 78.7% in 2020/2021, but the report assesses that the system failed to maintain this progress at the end of the period.
In terms of gender, girls maintain superior results to boys: 90.3% versus 78.6% in basic education and 66.1% versus 62.7% in secondary during 2023/2024.
This indicator is part of SDG 4, whose goal is to ensure by 2030 that all children and youth have access to free, equitable, and quality primary and secondary education. The data is part of the seventh statistical report on the SDGs, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics of Cape Verde (INECV), which provides an updated overview of Cape Verde's situation in implementing these goals.
Additionally, the report mentions that the proportion of the population living below the international poverty line decreased from 4.6% in 2015 to 2.3% in 2022. The SDGs comprise 169 targets distributed across 17 major goals (social, environmental, economic, or institutional), defined by the United Nations with an implementation deadline of 2030. Among the main goals listed are the eradication of poverty, the end of hunger, and ensuring good health and well-being for all.
