The Stormers team this season is following a plan developed by Rassie Erasmus concerning the introduction of promising young players to the demands of European rugby while keeping the squad as fresh as possible.
Unlike in previous years, when radical changes were made for some matches using untested combinations, the Cape Town team is now using the Springboks method: gradually introducing newcomers while maintaining a strong core of experienced athletes.
This approach is yielding results: inexperienced players gain valuable game experience alongside teammates who have over 100 matches for the franchise. In the upcoming match against Scarlets in Cape Town within the United Rugby Championship (URC), Stormers will again make squad changes, but they will do so strategically to maintain continuity of play.
Assistant coach Dawie Snyman noted: 'We try to ensure that everyone understands how we operate and why. If there are small adjustments to the squad or some rotation, these players must be able to fit into those roles.'
He also emphasized the importance of retaining the core group: 'The core group will also be important to us because if we make radical changes, we can lose rhythm and the flow of the game under pressure.'
Snyman added that during the preseason, the team worked hard to build squad depth so that everyone was on the same page. He mentioned Marcus Muller, who works very hard and understands the requirements of his position. However, he agreed that small changes are better for maintaining continuity than large-scale reshuffles.
Stormers have named their season strategy the 'critical path,' aiming to advance young players up the career ladder while ensuring all athletes have sufficient time on the field. This plan is very similar to the method Erasmus uses with the Springboks when preparing the team for Rugby World Cups and other major tournaments.
Instead of simply throwing young players into difficult situations, Stormers are creating an environment where they can learn, develop, and gain confidence alongside established veterans. This allows young athletes to experience the physical demands and intensity of top-level rugby without being subjected to undue pressure of responsibility for the team.
The clash with Scarlets will provide another opportunity to find this balance, as Stormers strive to achieve a positive result while continuing to invest in the future of the franchise.
