Mohammad Kaif outraged by Mohammad Shami's exclusion from team and issues demands to BCCI

Active discussions have emerged regarding the omission of star fast bowler Mohammad Shami from the Indian squad selected for the tour of New Zealand. Fans and former cricketers expressed surprise at the absence of Shami's name across all formats: T20, ODI, and Test.

Former Indian player Mohammad Kaif publicly spoke in support of Shami. He demanded a clear explanation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selectors as to why Shami is facing such restrictions.

Mohammad Kaif insists on complete transparency in the selection process and requires the Board to openly explain the reason for excluding a player like Shami, who is a 'game-winner'. He strongly refuted those citing workload management, noting that Shami regularly plays in domestic cricket, scoring points, and questioned why he was not chosen. He also objected to the suggestion that he is not selected due to short spells, citing Jasprit Bumrah, who is also given rest.

Kaif referenced Shami's impressive statistics against New Zealand, emphasizing that New Zealand batsmen fear his name. He reminded that during the ODI World Cup 2023 semi-finals in Hardmastah and Wanokhedi, Shami single-handedly put New Zealand in a hopeless situation. Kaif believes that once the New Zealand players learned about Shami's absence from the tour, they felt relieved.

Considering Shami's current form, he took 37 wickets in 7 matches for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, including three five-wicket hauls. He also demonstrated his physical fitness by taking five wickets in the first match of this season. Nevertheless, the selectors' stance seems unclear, especially considering that Bhuvneshwar Kumar, aged 36, returned to the T20 squad approximately four years later, while Shami was deemed unworthy of any format.

Mohammad Shami has been consistently out of the selectors' sight for the past two years. During this long period, he could not participate in any international series for the country. Analyzing this phase of his career, it can be noted that his last international match for India was in March 2025. On March 9, 2025, Shami last appeared in the Indian jersey in the Champions Trophy final in Dubai.
