Mother left two sons alone on foggy mountain trail in Poland for ascent

Public outcry has erupted in Poland after a mother allegedly left her two sons, aged eight and fourteen, alone on a mountain hiking trail while she proceeded toward the summit.

The incident occurred in the Beskids mountains in southern Poland on Saturday, October 17, according to Euronews. The children were left waiting in poor weather conditions, as the area was covered in thick fog, until a group of tourists passed by and stopped to help.

The branch of the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (PTTK) in Zamość shared details of the incident on its Facebook page. The group of tourists was walking near where the blue and yellow trails diverge above Muche when they heard a child crying.

According to the post, the tourists found an eight-year-old boy crying, and his fourteen-year-old brother was standing nearby on the trail, looking bewildered. The boys explained that their mother had gone ahead to reach the summit, which was about an hour's walk from them.

It was reported that the mother told her sons that if they complained and did not want to continue walking, they should wait fifteen minutes. However, the children remained alone for significantly longer than this period.

Due to the dense fog affecting visibility and the harsh conditions on the trail, the tourists stayed with the boys until the mother returned. According to PTTK, the woman appeared approximately 15 minutes after the group found the children. Her younger son immediately took her hand and stopped crying.

When tourists asked her about the decision to leave two minors in the mountains under such conditions, she allegedly stated that she had only been gone for a moment and wanted to continue toward the summit. She also claimed that the children forced her to abandon her planned goal.

PTTK criticized the woman's apparent lack of remorse, noting that she only reluctantly apologized after being warned that her actions could lead to criminal prosecution. The post's author also pointed out that the apology should have been directed at the children, not other tourists, to which the woman did not respond.

The incident was reported to local authorities and sparked a public debate in Poland regarding parental responsibility and the risks of leaving children unattended on mountain trails.

Mountain weather can change rapidly, and fog can significantly reduce visibility, making navigation on unfamiliar routes difficult. Even experienced hikers can face difficulties when conditions deteriorate, while children left without adult supervision can be particularly vulnerable if they become scared, lost, or injured.

For families planning mountain hikes, it is crucial to choose routes suitable for the youngest or least experienced member of the group, check the forecast before setting out, and adjust plans when conditions become unsafe. Reaching the summit should never take priority over the safety of the people you are with.
