Tanzania tightens medical controls for travelers amid Ebola concerns

Tanzania has tightened measures for medical screening and surveillance of international passengers following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and a recent case in neighboring Kenya linked to a patient arriving from the DRC.

These measures came into effect immediately. According to Travel Advisory No. 18, issued by the Ministry of Health on Saturday, all arrivals must complete an online epidemiological surveillance form before departing Tanzania or upon arrival.

The advisory states that travelers are required to provide accurate information via the ministry's online portal and retain the confirmation QR code or number for verification by health port authorities.

The notice, signed by Permanent Secretary Grace Magembe, specifies that everyone entering the country through airports, land borders, and seaports will undergo a medical examination, which includes a temperature check.

Individuals suspected of having symptoms of EVD or other infectious diseases will be monitored according to national screening procedures. High-risk travelers will be tracked daily for 21 days via automated messages or other communication channels, and they must cooperate with the follow-up process and respond to messages even after leaving Tanzania.

The Ministry also strongly recommended that travelers and transport operators adhere to infection prevention measures, including hand hygiene, use of sanitizers, and avoiding unnecessary physical contact.

The advisory also stipulates that any vehicle or vessel contaminated by a suspected case, cargo, or human remains related to EVD or another infectious disease will be disinfected at the point of entry.

Travelers are advised to report suspicious symptoms to the nearest medical facility or relevant authorities via the toll-free number 199 or by email at poe@afya.go.tz. The Ministry added that this advisory will be reviewed as necessary and urged travelers leaving Tanzania to comply with the entry requirements of their destination or transit countries.
