Expert Advice: How to Avoid Five Common Mistakes When Selling Old Gold in the UAE Before Diwali

Residents of the United Arab Emirates who plan to sell old gold jewelry and purchase new items before Indian festivals should avoid five typical mistakes. An industry expert warns that such errors can lead to the loss of hundreds or even thousands of dirhams.

Dhanteras falls on Friday, November 6th, and Diwali is on Sunday, November 8th. Traditionally, it is considered auspicious to buy gold on these days, and jewelry stores across the UAE usually see a large influx of visitors from the Indian community.

According to data from the Dubai Jewellery Group, prices for 24K, 22K, 21K, and 18K gold closed at Dh502.0, Dh464.75, Dh445.75, and Dh328.0 per gram respectively during the week.

Rishi Vaya, co-founder of sellyourgold.ae, noted that many sellers begin transactions without proper preparation and risk receiving an amount less than the actual value of their gold.

Five Mistakes to Avoid

The first mistake is not knowing the purity and weight. Gold is primarily valued based on its purity and weight. Sellers who do not know whether their jewelry is 18K, 21K, 22K, or 24K, or what its weight is, are at a disadvantage, according to Vaya. He advised checking the hallmark, assessing the weight, and researching the current market price before approaching a buyer.

The second mistake is misunderstanding the valuation of jewelry with stones. Typically, buyers only pay for the gold content, not for the design or the gemstones. Stones are valued separately, and manufacturing charges are not reimbursed when selling jewelry. Vaya emphasized: 'Sellers expecting their elaborately decorated or stone-studded pieces to be worth more often end up disappointed.'

The third mistake is selling under pressure. Since gold is a liquid asset, sellers do not need to rush into a deal. Vaya noted that even allocating 24 hours to compare offers and choose a reliable buyer can significantly affect the final amount received.

The fourth mistake is accepting the first offer. Even a small difference in deductions can amount to hundreds or thousands of dirhams when selling a large quantity of gold. Obtaining two or three appraisals allows sellers to compare them and potentially achieve a better price, as he explained.

The fifth mistake is confusing retail and wholesale prices. The price displayed in jewelry stores is the retail selling price, not the price buyers offer for old gold. Consequently, deductions are applied when selling jewelry. Vaya advises that understanding these deductions and choosing a buyer who clearly explains the calculation will help sellers make informed decisions.

The gold you have at home is likely worth more than you think.

'Almost certainly yes,' stated Vaya. Gold is widely purchased in the UAE for weddings, festivals, and family celebrations. Many households have accumulated jewelry over many years, often when prices were significantly lower, but they have not reviewed its value recently. Before selling, residents should check the current gold price and recent price fluctuations, as even a small change can affect the income from a significant volume. They should also determine the purity and approximate weight of their jewelry.

Vaya reported that his company uses professional X-ray fluorescence (XRF) devices to test gold purity, with the process conducted in the presence of clients. 'You see every reading in real time, and nothing happens behind closed doors,' he said. The appraisal shows the seller the gold's value based on the prevailing international spot price before any deduction is applied, he explained. 'No hidden fees, no extra payments, just one transparent figure,' he added, noting that sellers can decline an offer without any cost if they are not satisfied.

Vaya recommended that sellers check the current Dubai gold price for the purity of their jewelry before approaching a buyer. A transparent buyer should explain the gold valuation and clearly disclose any deductions. 'If the buyer cannot explain their calculation in simple terms or imposes many fees and commissions, walk away,' he advised.

For residents planning to buy gold, Vaya described the metal as a 'long-term stake, not a trading instrument,' asserting that it is better suited for preserving long-term value than for short-term trading. Gold bars generally have a lower markup than jewelry because they do not carry the same manufacturing costs. Therefore, they may be more economical for those buying gold purely as an investment. Jewelry, meanwhile, incurs additional craftsmanship costs, but it can also be worn. Over a long period of ownership, the rise in gold prices can offset some higher initial costs, although returns are not guaranteed. 'If the goal is purely financial profit, gold bars are the wiser choice. If the goal is a combination of pleasure and preserving long-term value, jewelry can serve both functions well,' he concluded.'

Gold prices in Dubai stable; 24-karat gold trades above 500 dirhams per gram

The start of the week was marked by stable gold prices in Dubai, coinciding with the beginning of the Indian festival Navratri on Sunday. According to data from Dubai Jewellery Group, 24-karat gold was priced at 505.5 dirhams per gram on Monday. Meanwhile, 22-karat, 21-karat, and 18-karat gold traded at prices of 468, 448.75, and 384.75 dirhams per gram, respectively. The most affordable option, 14-karat gold, sold for 300 dirhams per gram on Monday morning.

The nine-day Navratri festival is considered an auspicious period for purchasing gold. During this holiday, many people buy gold jewelry, coins, and bars, viewing them as symbols of prosperity, wealth, and good luck. Retailers often note an increase in demand as families make festive purchases and investments.

Spot gold fell by 0.16 percent to $4188 per ounce, while silver dropped by 0.14 percent to $223.55 per ounce.

Simon-Peter Massabni, Head of Business Development at XS.com, noted that gold is entering a critical phase, trading around $4185 per ounce while attempting to regain the $4200 level. He added that one of the primary factors supporting gold is the weakening US dollar and falling Treasury yields, which could give the precious metal more room to recover. A weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for holders of other currencies, and lower yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding an asset that does not generate regular income. However, according to his forecasts, these favorable conditions will only persist if yields continue to decline. If the dollar regains strength and Treasury yields rise again, gold could quickly lose a significant part of its recent momentum.

According to Massabni, the most important factor determining gold's next move will be the US Consumer Price Index report expected this week. He emphasized that markets analyze inflation not as an isolated economic indicator, but as a key factor shaping expectations regarding the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. If inflation comes in below expectations, pressure for tighter monetary policy may ease, and yields could fall, creating a more favorable environment for gold growth. Conversely, if the data shows more persistent inflationary pressure, expectations for further interest rate hikes could resume, potentially pushing the dollar and yields higher and putting new pressure on the precious metal.

Massabni expects increased volatility before the report release, and the market's reaction to any inflation surprise is likely to be more significant than current fluctuations in gold prices.

Gold prices in Dubai fell by 35.75 dirhams in a month; 14K trades below 300 dirhams per gram

Gold prices in Dubai remained stable at the beginning of the week after losing 35.75 dirhams over the past month. According to Dubai Jewellery Group, on Monday when markets opened, the 24K option traded at 498 dirhams per gram, which is lower than the 499 dirhams recorded during the weekend.

Other varieties of precious metal, including 22K, 21K, 18K, and 14K, traded at prices of 461, 442, 379, and 295.5 dirhams per gram, respectively.

The spot weight of gold dropped by 0.18 percent, reaching $4132.2 per ounce. Silver showed an increase of 0.84 percent, reaching the mark of $60.92.

The metal stabilized amid the sustained strength of the US dollar, although losses were limited after recent weak economic data significantly lowered expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike this month, according to Reuters reports.

Financial analyst and Investment Director at Century Financial, Vijay Valecha, reported last week that investors reduced the probability of a rate hike in October to almost 50 percent, compared to previous forecasts of 70 percent.

This followed comments from John Williams, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, who suggested that only one more rate change might occur later this year.

Valecha also pointed to rising US Treasury yields as a risk factor for a recovery in gold prices, noting that the 30-year yield exceeded 5.61 percent, the highest level since 2002. He added that upcoming US economic data, including the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index and the non-farm payroll report, will be key to determining gold's short-term direction. In his view, gold may retest support around $4120 before further growth.
