During periods of heat, rain, or seasonal changes, there are often reports of snakes appearing inside residential buildings, gardens, or storage areas. The unexpected appearance of a snake in a home can cause intense fear and pose a danger to humans. However, snakes do not penetrate human settlements without reason; they are attracted by certain factors, such as dirt, humidity, the presence of food, and safe hiding places.
Knowing the reasons why snakes seek entry into a home allows for timely adoption of necessary precautions to ensure family safety. Below are the main reasons for the appearance of snakes in a dwelling and methods to protect against them.
The most significant reason for the appearance of snakes is the presence of rodents, such as rats, as well as lizards and frogs, since they serve as food for snakes. If there are many rats in the house or kitchen, snakes may enter in search of prey.
Another factor is piles of trash and wood. Old items, cardboard boxes, piles of bricks, and dry wood left in warehouses, yards, or on roofs create comfortable shelters for snakes. Snakes easily establish dark and quiet spots there.
Stagnant water and dampness also attract snakes. Moisture accumulated around the house, dampness under pots, and mold in bathrooms or basements lure snakes, as they seek water and coolness. In hot weather, snakes actively move to areas with increased humidity.
Dense vegetation and tall grass in the garden or on the balcony also contribute to the penetration of snakes. Snakes can easily hide among dense plants or tall grass and then enter the house through cracks.
Furthermore, snakes can enter through openings in walls, gaps under doors, holes in windows, and uncovered drains. Through these unprotected openings, snakes can freely get inside the dwelling.
To prevent the appearance of snakes, it is recommended to conduct disinsection to eliminate rats and insects, as the disappearance of food sources will cause snakes to stop coming.
Old wood, bricks, or excess cardboard should not be stored on the property or in closets. It is necessary to regularly mow the grass and care for plants in the garden.
To protect entry points, special protective elements (snake-guards) or rubber seals should be installed under main doors. It is also important to install fine metal mesh on wall exits and drains.
To repel snakes from entrances and windows, a mixture of phenol, kerosene, or garlic-mustard oil can be used. The strong odor of these substances repels snakes.
