Submerged Ancient Cities: Five Civilizations Drowned Under Water

There are many ancient cities in the world that were once filled with human life but have since been submerged over time. The reasons for this vary: from earthquakes and natural disasters to the construction of dams that completely hid settlements underwater. Today, the remains of these cities are under the water, and many mysteries related to their history continue to amaze people. Below are five such ancient cities that were once inhabited but are now hidden beneath the surface of the water.

Submerged Ancient Cities:

The city of Dwarka, located on the coast of Gujarat, is associated with the figure of Lord Krishna. According to Hindu beliefs and ancient texts, it was Krishna's kingdom. It is believed that Dwarka during Krishna's time subsequently sank into the sea. Some ancient structures and artifacts have been discovered near the coast of Gujarat, which interest archaeologists and historians. Nevertheless, discussions continue regarding the connection of these findings to mythological Dwarka and the exact location of the city.

Baie, located in Italy, was once a famous and luxurious resort during the Roman era, where wealthy people came for recreation and entertainment, making it an analogue of the elite resorts of that time. It is assumed that a significant part of the city went underwater due to volcanic activity and slow land subsidence. Today, its ancient ruins can be seen under the Mediterranean Sea, demonstrating the lifestyle of the Roman period through old buildings and structures.

In China, under Lake Qiandao in Jiangsu Province, there is an ancient city known as Line City or Shi Cheng. The history of this city is estimated to be about 1300 years old. In 1959, the city flooded after the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the Xin'an River. Notably, many old buildings and structures underwater have been preserved in relatively good condition. Today, this place attracts divers and underwater photography enthusiasts.

Port Royal in Jamaica was one of the busiest and wealthiest cities in the Caribbean in the 17th century, famous for maritime trade and piracy. However, in 1692, a strong earthquake caused a large part of the city to sink into the sea, ending its prosperity. Today, its old remains underwater serve as a reminder of the disaster, and diving allows visitors to see the ruins of old buildings and streets.

Heraklion, located in Egypt, once served as an important port city, strategically vital for trade in Ancient Egypt due to its location at the mouth of the Nile. Over time, due to natural catastrophes and land subsidence, most of the city went into the Mediterranean Sea and remained hidden underwater for centuries. Its remains were discovered following subsequent underwater surveys. These ancient structures and other historical items provide valuable information about the ancient civilization and trade of Egypt.
