To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise, which changed the genres of science fiction and fantasy after the film's premiere in 1977, Lucasfilm and Disney have announced a special exhibition titled 'Star Wars: The Experience – A Journey Through the Galaxy.'
The exhibition will run from February to September 2027 at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. It will feature over 70 original artifacts used during the filming of the movies, including iconic items such as Darth Vader's mask and the fan-favorite droids R2-D2 and C-3PO.
Following its showing in Philadelphia, the exhibition is planned to become mobile and undertake a five-year tour through other institutions across North America.
In addition to legendary items like Darth Maul's lightsaber, droids, and Grogu himself (the Mandalorian's loyal companion from the Disney+ series), visitors can experience an immersive journey by blending elements of the saga with technology relevant to the franchise's history.
Guests can stroll through the courtyard of Naboo and see Queen Amidala's throne, presented in the 'Queen Amidala’s Throne Room,' which is created using projections and suspended fabrics. The 'Wireframe Works' gallery displays sketches and designs of the saga's spacecraft and sets on acrylic panels, along with design notes and diagrams.
The 'Carbon Freeze Capture' attraction is dedicated to a familiar moment from the original trilogy: Han Solo's freezing in carbonite in the second film, 'Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back' (1980).
The exhibition also includes over 100 saga toys and more than 30 rare prototypes never before shown to the public. The exhibit examines the history of Star Wars over 50 years, showcasing the evolution of collectible figures and toys as an integral part of the franchise's cultural heritage from the 1970s to the present day.
The exhibition is scheduled from February 13, 2027, to September 6, 2027. The venue is the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (USA). Ticket sales for the general public will begin in November 2026.
