The Ministry of Transport reported that the share of mahallas in Uzbekistan served by public transport increased from 87.9% to 98.8% between 2020 and 2026. Concurrently, the daily number of passengers grew from 1.2 million to 2.6 million.
During this period, 1037 new routes were launched across the country. Currently, public transport serves 9331 mahallas, while the number of mahallas without route coverage has decreased from 1118 to 111.
The share of economically active population using public transport also increased: this indicator rose from 21% in 2022 to 37% in 2026.
Between 2023 and 2026, 3500 buses were purchased and put into operation to update the fleet, including 753 electric buses.
Changes were also made to traffic organization. On routes operating under the contract ground system, bus intervals were reduced from 18–20 minutes to 10–12 minutes. The average travel time to the destination decreased from 45 minutes to 30 minutes.
Infrastructure development continues in 2026, which includes the commissioning of an additional 87 kilometers of dedicated lanes for buses. Furthermore, authorities have outlined plans for further expansion of the bus fleet. By 2030, Uzbekistan aims to increase the number of new buses to 5000 and the number of electric buses to 2000.
