MG Motor India has stopped selling its mid-size crossover, the MG Astor. Although the company has not officially confirmed this information, reports indicate the model is being withdrawn from sale in India. Notably, the model is still listed on the company's official website.
MG launched this vehicle in 2021. Its main competitors in the market included the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Skoda Kushaq. Despite a long presence in the market, sales of the MG Astor failed to gain the necessary momentum.
According to a report by AutoCar Professional, the average monthly sales of this SUV between September 2025 and September 2026 amounted to only 112 units, indicating weak market dynamics, especially considering that this is a high-demand segment for mid-size SUVs.
Despite the Astor being equipped with a well-appointed cabin and having an attractive appearance, the main issue is the powertrain. Unlike competing models, which offer various transmission options such as petrol, diesel, CNG, and hybrid, the MG Astor was initially offered only with a petrol engine.
Previously, there were two petrol engine variants in the lineup: a 1.5-liter four-cylinder atmospheric engine with 110 hp and a three-cylinder turbocharged engine with 140 hp. The turbocharged engine was discontinued by the company in February 2025, leaving buyers only with the 1.5-liter atmospheric engine option. This engine was paired with a five-speed manual transmission or CVT, and the car's design resembled a crossover. The electric ZSEV version offers a different set of options, but it is more expensive.
Nevertheless, the withdrawal of this model from the range does not mean that MG is leaving the mid-size SUV segment. The company is preparing to enter this market with a new offering. There have been previous reports about the development of a replacement for the MG Astor, which will be based on the SIGMA platform. This platform will allow for the offering of both internal combustion engines and hybrid and electric powertrains, which will help address the shortcomings that prevented Astor sales from growing.
The replacement for the MG Astor is expected to be introduced in 2027.
