According to the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV's doctors considered him fit for discharge from the hospital on Saturday following surgery to treat lung cancer.
In a note published by the Vatican, doctors Luigi Carboni and Stefano Margaritore noted that the decision was made after analyzing blood test results, a chest X-ray taken that day, and an assessment of his clinical condition. Pope Leo, who is 71 years old, had been in the Gemelli hospital, located north of the Vatican, since Tuesday, where part of his right lung was removed to extract a tumor.
The Vatican confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will be discharged today from the Gemelli clinic. According to the Vatican, he will leave the hospital early in the day and return to the Vatican. The next day, he will recite the Angelus prayer from the window of his papal apartment.
Usually, the Pope recites the Angelus prayer from the window of the Apostolic Palace; however, in previous years, former Popes John Paul II and Francis, who were also undergoing treatment at Gemelli, recited this prayer from the windows of their hospital rooms.
