Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra shared important news regarding his return. The two-time Olympic medalist announced that his knee feels significantly better after an ankle injury and intends to return to competition next year, specifically in 2027. His goal is to elevate his performance level in the upcoming season.
In August during training, Neeraj suffered an Ankle Ligament Tear. This injury forced him to miss the 2026 Asian Games and the Diamond League final. Previously, he achieved a throw of 88.05 meters at the Diamond League in Busan, securing second place.
During the presentation of the Audi Q3 in Mumbai, Neeraj discussed his recovery. He noted that the Olympic Games are still far off, as they will take place in 2028. He added: 'As you know, I sustained an injury, but now I am ready to return. My injured ankle feels much better, and the recovery is progressing well.'
Chopra continued by stating that his primary focus currently is on a strong and confident comeback next year and achieving results he has not yet managed to attain.
Despite being unable to participate in the 2026 Asian Games, Neeraj felt satisfaction from the performances of Indian javelin throwers. At these championships in Nagoya, Yashvir Singh won silver, and Rohit Yadav won bronze. Yashvir's best throw was 85.72 meters, and Rohit's best throw was 84.35 meters. Rumesh Pathirage from Sri Lanka won gold with a throw of 88.55 meters.
At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Neeraj won gold with a throw of 88.88 meters, while Kishore Jena secured silver with a throw of 87.54 meters. At that time, India won both gold and silver medals in this event. Even without the participation of Neeraj and Kishore in 2026, Indian athletes continued the tradition of victories, winning two medals.
Neeraj remarked that he believes not only Yashvir but also Rohit showed excellent play. He recalled that in the previous games, they won two medals—gold and silver. He emphasized that despite the absence of Kishore and himself, they managed to win two medals this time. He also stated that the emergence of these new young athletes is a very positive sign for India, demonstrating that the country is not lacking in talent. He wished them all the best for the future and advised them to take care of themselves, avoid injuries, and simply enjoy their sport.
