Municipality Opens Renovated Swimming Pool and New Sports Fields in Umlazi

Residents of Umlazi in Durban can enjoy the summer season thanks to the official reopening of the renovated 50-meter BB pool and the commissioning of new multi-functional sports fields, following extensive restoration work on the pool which sustained significant damage.

These improvements became possible shortly before the start of the festive season, providing residents with access to enhanced recreational areas and creating more opportunities for youth to develop athletic abilities. The pool renovation was conducted in three stages, with work commencing in May 2025.

One of the important additions is a specialized children's pool where young swimmers can learn basic water safety skills and increase their confidence in the water. The updated facility increases the total number of operational pools in eThekwini to 43.

New Center for Sporting Talents

The area has been transformed into a sports center featuring new multi-purpose courts designated for basketball, tennis, netball, volleyball, and indoor football. These facilities are intended to motivate residents to engage in sports, lead healthier lifestyles, and offer constructive ways for youth to spend their free time.

The Chairperson of the Municipal Services Committee, Councillor Zama Sokhabase, emphasized that this investment goes beyond simply providing recreational spaces. She stated: 'Through these facilities, we aim to nurture sporting talents, provide youth with opportunities to develop skills, and keep them off the streets. Sport plays an important role in shaping discipline, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and creating positive paths for our youth.'

Sokhabase also appealed to residents to take good care of the facilities and ensure their accessibility for future generations. She added: 'We urge the community to take responsibility for these facilities, use them responsibly, and protect them from vandalism so they can benefit coming generations.'

Safety Warning for Swimmers

With the pool resuming operations before the busy summer season, the municipality reminded residents about the necessity of prioritizing safety. The city strongly recommends that swimmers always follow the instructions of pool staff and lifeguards on duty, and exercise caution.

Parents and guardians are also advised to closely monitor children, especially near and inside the pool.
