The Joburg Ballet's production of 'Carmen' will travel to Pretoria to perform twice at the South African State Theatre on October 24 and 25. This tour follows 10 shows held in Johannesburg.
The ballet, choreographed by South African choreographer Veronique Paeper to music by Georges Bizet, is part of the season dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Joburg Ballet. Artistic Director Dan Hurst noted that 'Carmen' serves as a celebration of continuity, excellence, and renewal, highlighting the dramatic narrative, virtuosic dance, and long-term creative partnerships that have defined the distinguished path of Joburg Ballet.
During the performances in Pretoria, new dancers will take on the leading roles of Carmen and Don José. On Saturday, October 24, at 3:00 PM, Savannah Jacobson and Mario Gaglione will debut. On Sunday, October 25, Latoya Mokoena will play Carmen, and Miles Carrot will play Don José. Mokoena previously debuted in this role during tours in Johannesburg.
The Johannesburg season featured leading dancers Revila Jones and Monique Christina in principal roles, as well as Rioko Yagyu and Ivan Domiciano, who also debuted in lead roles. Additionally, Darrag Aurids and Bruno Miranda performed in a new duet.
Hurst added that this production was chosen to complement other works in the company's anniversary season. He explained that each production intentionally reflects a different facet of the company's artistic identity. 'Carmen' acts as an ideal artistic counterpoint to the ethereal romanticism of 'Giselle', the elegant refinement and vast beauty of 'Celestial Bodies', and the visceral theatrical power of 'Bachchi'. Thanks to Georges Bizet's unforgettable score and the choreography of Veronique Paeper, one of South Africa's most prominent choreographers, and its embodiment by the exceptional dancers of Joburg Ballet, this production promises to be one of the defining moments of Joburg Ballet's landmark anniversary season.
Paeper's production also unites the dancers and staff of the ballet who have collaborated with her over many years. Ballet master Kim Vieira and assistant ballet master Nicole Ferreira-Dill support the production, having worked under Paeper's direction in several of her works throughout their careers.
The Pretoria performances will take place at the South African State Theatre on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, both at 3:00 PM. More detailed information about the 25th anniversary of Joburg Ballet is available on the website www.joburgballet.com.
