Significant changes have occurred within the Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down from his role as the team's head coach. This was officially announced by Mumbai Indians on October 17th (Saturday).
Under Jayawardene's guidance, the team won the IPL title three times, establishing him among the franchise's most successful coaches. His association with Mumbai Indians spanned approximately ten years. He first took on the head coach position in 2017 and held it until 2022. He then resumed duties in 2024 and worked with the team until 2026. During his tenure, special emphasis was placed on discipline, teamwork, and improving player interaction.
Mumbai Indians owner, Nita Mukesh Ambani, highly praised Mahela Jayawardene's contribution. She noted that Jayawardene's calm leadership, honesty, and dedication to the game were crucial for the franchise. Nita stated: 'Mahela has made significant contributions to Mumbai Indians over many years. We are grateful for his leadership and commitment. We will always cherish the journey we took together and the memories we created. Mahela will always be part of our family.'
After leaving his post, the Sri Lankan veteran Mahela Jayawardene appeared very emotional. He thanked the players, coaching staff, and fans of Mumbai Indians. He also cited the trust, support, and friendship of Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani as an important part of his journey. Jayawardene emphasized that he experienced many memorable moments, overcame difficulties, and achieved proud accomplishments with the franchise. Wishing the team success in the future, he noted that Mumbai Indians will always hold a special place in his heart.
In 2022, Mahela Jayawardene was appointed as the Global Head of Performance for Mumbai Indians. In this role, he worked on expanding the franchise across various T20 leagues in different countries and developing a unified cricket concept among the teams. During this period, the women's teams of Mumbai Indians, MI New York, and MI Emirates won titles in their respective tournaments, strengthening the global recognition of the franchise.
