Kaizer Chiefs face squad depth challenge due to key player injuries

The unbeaten start of the Kaizer Chiefs team in the Betway Premiership season is beginning to face serious challenges due to the growing number of injured players, forcing the technical staff to reconsider their options at a critical stage of the campaign.

The 'Glamour Boys' avoided defeats in the first eight league matches, but three consecutive draws have slowed their pace. The latest disappointing result was a draw with Stellenbosch FC at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday, where the absence of several important footballers was evident in the changed lineup.

Chiefs could not field midfielders Lebogang Maboe, Adolph Mtasingua, and Siphesile Ndlovu, as well as forward Langelile Phili and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen. This particularly affected the midfield, where assistant coach Dillon Sheppard explained the decision to place Riva Froesler next to Sibongiseni Mthethwa.

Instead of risking the recently recovered young player Tulani Mabaso, Chiefs turned to Froesler, who trained in that position during the pre-season. Sheppard noted: 'Given the injuries we had, young Tulani (Mabaso) has only just returned from injury. I think it would be unfair to throw him into a game right after we came back from the FIFA break.' He added: 'So we had to look for alternatives. In the pre-season, we worked with Riva in midfield, and as I said, he played in that position before.'

Froesler helped create a goal-scoring opportunity for Mduduzuzi Shabalala after Sinxolo Kwaiiba put Stellenbosch ahead, but this result deprived Chiefs of another chance to turn their unbeaten run into a more convincing accumulation of points.

Discussions about player selection have also drawn increased attention to Chiefs' tactical approach. Their 5-2-3 system is being criticized in recent matches, as questions arise about whether the team can consistently dominate the midfield and provide sufficient attacking threat.

Sheppard defended the flexibility of this system, stating that the system can become more attacking when wing-backs push forward. However, injuries have complicated the task of finding the right balance, especially when several midfield options are unavailable simultaneously.

The timing is far from ideal. Chiefs are preparing for a demanding match schedule that includes continental competitions and the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates on October 31st. The Amakhosi team will travel to Zambia to meet Red Arrows in the first match of their second Confederation Cup CAF 2026/27 qualifying round on Saturday. The return match will take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on October 23rd.

The immediate priority will be successfully navigating the two-match confrontation without putting unnecessary pressure on players returning from injury. Furthermore, the coaching staff needs to find a way to maintain squad competitiveness across various tournaments. While the unbeaten league record remains a positive point, it cannot hide the need for more wins. The team's next task is to demonstrate that the squad possesses sufficient depth and tactical flexibility to maintain this record and turn draws into victories. Injuries may not derail the season, but the coming weeks will show how well Amakhosi copes when their preferred options are unavailable.
