Shubman Gill organizes personal training session ahead of New Zealand tour

Before the start of the series of matches against New Zealand, Indian captain Shubman Gill has developed a special preparation strategy. According to available data, he will take four to five personal reserve bowlers on the tour, fully covering all expenses related to their travel, accommodation, and stay.

Working with these bowlers, Gill will focus on improving his game according to the conditions in New Zealand. Usually, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provides reserve bowlers for players' training during overseas tours, but Shubman Gill decided to organize this process independently.

This step demonstrates the captain's serious approach to preparing for the Test matches. A BCCI official told the news agency PTI that Shubman Gill will not participate in the India-A Tests as he needs to play in the ODI series. According to the official, Gill may depart for New Zealand on October 23 or 24, and he will personally cover the costs for the four to five bowlers who will accompany him.

Previously, Shubman Gill demonstrated mastery in England, scoring 754 runs in five matches of the series against England last year. Now in New Zealand, he faces a different challenge, as there is a high probability that fast bowlers will receive assistance. Therefore, technique, patience, and the ability to play according to conditions are critically important.

Before leaving for New Zealand, Shubman Gill will play for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy tournament. He was unable to participate in the team's first match for personal reasons but will return to play in the match against Chhattisgarh, which starts on October 18 in Mullampur. This match in the Ranji Trophy will give Shubman Gill an opportunity to play competitive red-ball cricket. After this, his preparation and captaincy qualities will be closely watched, as this tour is extremely important for India, and Gill's performance could play a decisive role in the team's success.

The first T20 is scheduled for October 22 in Christchurch at 12:30. The second T20 will take place on October 24 in Christchurch at 12:30. The third T20 will be held on October 27 in Wellington at 12:30. The fourth T20 is set for October 30 in Auckland at 12:30, and the fifth T20 is on November 1 in Hamilton at 12:30.

The ODI series starts on November 4 in Auckland at 7:30 AM. The second ODI will be on November 7 in Wellington at 7:30 AM. The third ODI is scheduled for November 10 in Hamilton at 7:30 AM. The fourth ODI will take place on November 13 in Mount Maunganui at 7:30 AM, and the fifth ODI on November 15 in Mount Maunganui at 7:30 AM.

The Test series will begin on November 19 in Wellington at 3:30 AM and run until November 23. The second Test will be from November 27 to December 1 in Christchurch at 3:30 AM.

Despite being fully fit, Jasprit Bumrah will not be selected for the ODI tour against New Zealand by the coaching staff

The main fast bowler of the Indian team, Jasprit Bumrah, will not be able to participate in the five-match ODI series with the Indian squad during the visit to New Zealand. The reason for his exclusion is not an injury, but a special strategy developed by the team management.

According to reports, Bumrah is completely healthy, but the team management aims to prepare him in optimal condition for the upcoming Test series. According to The Times of India, the management prefers that Bumrah focus on preparing for cricket in the 'red ball' format (Test format) instead of participating in the ODI series. Currently, Bumrah has started preparations for the Test matches in Ahmedabad.

It is planned that he will arrive at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) by the end of this month and then travel to New Zealand. There is also a possibility of including Bumrah in the third match of the India A series, which starts on November 6, to increase his workload. This will allow him to get sufficient rest before the first Test, which starts on November 19 in Wellington.

One source reported that due to the length of the tour, prioritizing Bumrah's workload is crucial. He is the leader of the Indian batting lineup, and the team wants to ensure his full readiness for the Test series. It should be noted that last year, Bumrah last participated in a multi-day match against South Africa at home.

Earlier this year, Bumrah missed two Test matches against Sri Lanka due to a knee injury. Now, the team management wishes to keep him available for future Test matches. Many discussions have taken place among key figures associated with the team regarding this matter.

This strategy is not limited only to the visit to New Zealand; the upcoming five-Test series against Australia next year (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) is also being considered. The team is focusing on the World Test Championship (WTC), so the tactic of preserving Bumrah for more significant Test matches may be adopted instead of fielding him in less prioritized bilateral series.

The squads for the Indian ODI and Test teams are expected to be announced in the coming days. Selectors await updated information on the health and availability of players such as Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Rishabh Pant, after which the squad picture may become clearer.

New Zealand announces ODI squad for matches against India; one key player returns

New Zealand has announced the squads for its five-match ODI series against India, which begins on November 4th. The New Zealand Cricket (NZC) organization presented the player lists, featuring athletes such as Finn Allen, Loki Ferguson, Rachin Ravindra, and Tim Seifert. However, it should be noted that these four players will not be available for the entire series.

NZC formed two separate squads for the five ODIs, meaning there will be changes in the team composition throughout the series. The reason for this decision is also preparation for the upcoming two-match Test series, which will start shortly after the conclusion of the ODI tournament. The New Zealand team management aims to prepare some players for the Test matches in advance by withdrawing them from the ODI squad.

A squad of 14 players was selected for the first three ODIs. In addition to captain Michael Santner, this squad included Michael Bresshaw, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Df, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, and Will Young.

Rachin Ravindra, who previously could not participate in the T20 International series against India due to a shoulder injury, will now return to the ODI squad and can play in the first three matches. He is expected to contribute in both batting and bowling. For the fourth and fifth ODIs, NZC chose a different team, which will feature Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, known for their aggressive style in T20. Allen and Loki Ferguson played for New Zealand in the last ODI of 2023, and Seifert last played in 50 overs in the home series against Pakistan about eighteen months ago.

The team selected for the last two matches also includes Santner, Bresshaw, Chapman, Jacob Df, Blair Tickner, and Will Young. Additionally, Christian Clark, Matt Fisher, Mitch Heap, and Nick Kelly were included, giving the team an opportunity to test the depth of its squad in the final two ODIs.

The series between India and New Zealand extends beyond just bilateral encounters, as both teams will also consider preparations for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2027, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Consequently, defining player roles and forming a strong squad is extremely important for the team management.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter noted that playing at home against such a strong team as India presents a great opportunity. He emphasized that with the World Cup being about a year away, this series will be very significant for preparation. According to Walter, including seven additional players in the squad for the last two ODIs is aimed at assessing the depth of the team to understand how these players perform against a world-class team and how many options are available for the major tournament.

Three players recovering from injuries—Jacari Foulkes (iliopsoas muscle), Will O'Rourke (calf), and Ben Sears (ankle)—were not included in the selection list for the ODI series against India.
