Five waterfalls recommended to visit in the Greater Florianópolis region

For those who wish to get away from the beaches and explore something different in Greater Florianópolis, the region offers beautiful natural attractions, often unknown even to local residents. Unlike the image usually associated with the capital of Santa Catarina, several places house rivers, valleys, and waterfalls in areas covered by almost preserved Atlantic Forest. These refuges provide an alternative to the beach environment, offering fresh water, forest shade, and tranquility, especially on weekdays.

However, it is important to warn that none of these waterfalls have great infrastructure to receive visitors. During rainy periods, caution is crucial due to slippery rocks and possible flash floods that can carry branches and stones. It is recommended to bring supplies, drinks, appropriate clothing, and seek safety information, avoiding trails without supervision.

Poção Waterfall

Poção Waterfall is considered one of the most popular waterfalls in Greater Florianópolis. Although it is close to UFSC, the federal university, and is known by locals, it is not yet very visited by tourists passing through the area. This complex is located in the Córrego Grande neighborhood, in the capital, and access is facilitated by a short trail, only 600 meters long.

The waterfall attracts attention for its view: it is about eight meters high, and just below the fall there is a pool approximately three meters deep. This pool is the highlight of the location, being an ideal destination for those looking to cool off in the cold waters, especially on hotter days.

Gurita Waterfall

Located in the south of Santa Catarina Island, Gurita Waterfall requires a trail of about 7 kilometers, starting from Lagoa do Peri Park. Although the route passes through a beautiful area of native vegetation, some sections require extra attention, especially because of the steep and slippery rocks, characterizing a moderate level trail.

At the end of the journey, visitors find two waterfalls that create natural pools of clear and cold water, inviting refreshment on the hottest summer days. Surrounded by dense forest, the location provides an atmosphere of isolation and calm, perfect for those who want to slow down away from the hustle and bustle of the beaches.

Rio Vermelho Waterfall

Rio Vermelho Waterfall, in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, is highlighted as one of the most impressive in the region. The grandeur of the three immense falls, the force of the water, and the energy of the place make it a favorite. The trail is properly marked, but requires some preparation, being classified as intermediate for beginners. In addition to its striking beauty, the location is very well preserved, which enriches the experience. It is essential to maintain preservation, taking the trash back.

Specifically in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, within the area that makes up the State Park of Serra do Tabuleiro, this imposing waterfall is located. Access takes about 1.8 kilometers and can be covered in approximately 40 minutes. The scenery, framed by native forest, offers direct contact with the Catarinense nature, presenting a wilder aspect, with dense vegetation and the sound of cold water among the stones, making it a great refuge for groups, couples, or families.

Jarrão Waterfall

Jarrão Waterfall is located in Palhoça, in the metropolitan area of Florianópolis, near Morro do Cambirela, famous for reaching an altitude of 1,052 meters. This hill attracts hiking enthusiasts looking to climb to the summit to appreciate a unique view. Access to the complex is via a trail of approximately 3.8 kilometers, starting at a stream at kilometer 223 of BR-101. The walk itself constitutes part of the experience, as the route crosses a living section of the Atlantic Forest.

This option is interesting for those who want to relax and cool off in the summer, surrounded by a vast and practically untouched forest. The waterfall also has a special feature: a natural pool with an 'infinity edge', in addition to a stunning view of the Santa Catarina coast.

Amâncio Waterfall

Located in Biguaçu, just a few minutes from the capital of Santa Catarina, Amâncio Waterfall is reached by a dirt road that crosses landscapes with native vegetation. At the end of the path, the destination offers natural pools of crystal-clear water, perfect for bathing and family outings.

One of the points of interest is a large smooth rock that functions as a natural slide, allowing sliding into a wide pool formed by the waterfall's water. Observing carefully, the visit also reveals a rich variety of flora, including tanheiro, jerivá, bromeliads, and orchids. Among the animals, birds such as toucans and araucarias can be seen, and, with luck, coatis and tayras.
