Currently, wearing costume or fashion jewelry that complements any outfit has become a popular choice among women. Whether it is earrings with an oxidized coating, AD necklaces, or Kundan-worked pieces, they instantly enhance one's appearance. However, the main problem with costume jewelry is that after a few uses, it begins to tarnish due to exposure to air, moisture, sweat, or perfume, losing its original shine.
Even beloved and expensive pieces can be damaged due to insufficient care. If you encounter this issue, there is no need to worry; there are several simple, smart, and home remedies that will keep your costume jewelry new, shiny, and rust-proof for years to come.
Before using a new artificial piece of jewelry, it is recommended to apply a thin layer of clear nail polish. This protective layer prevents direct contact between the metal of the jewelry and sweat and air, ensuring that the costume jewelry does not tarnish and its coating does not wear off.
Never store jewelry in the open or in velvet/cotton boxes, as these materials absorb moisture. Jewelry should always be placed in airtight Zip-lock bags or wrapped in baking paper (butter paper) or cotton fabric. This guarantees that air and moisture do not get inside.
It is important to remember the rule: 'put on jewelry last and take off first.' Before putting on jewelry, you must wait at least 10–15 minutes after applying makeup, hairspray, and perfume. Chemicals and alcohol contained in perfumes can immediately change the color of the metal, causing it to tarnish.
Do not put jewelry away in a box immediately after attending an event or party. Sweat causes metal corrosion. After removing the jewelry, wipe it with a dry cotton cloth or napkin, let it air dry for about 10 minutes before placing it in a Zip-lock bag.
You can place one or two pieces of white chalk or small packets of silica gel (often found in new shoe boxes or bags) inside the jewelry drawer. These substances are capable of absorbing any moisture that forms inside the drawer, thereby ensuring the long-term preservation of the jewelry.
