Sunil Gavaskar criticized Indian players after defeat, stating that the pitch cannot be blamed

Following India's loss to West Indies in a T20 match in Hyderabad on Wednesday (October 14th) by a margin of 24 runs, questions arose regarding the Indian bowlers. The Indian team allowed the opponent to score 247 runs in 20 overs and could only reach 223 runs in pursuit of the target. After this defeat, debates began about the condition of the pitch, but former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar defended the bowlers, questioning the players' mistakes and noting that blaming the pitch for poor play is incorrect.

According to Sunil Gavaskar, more concern should be focused on the effectiveness of the Indian bowlers rather than the pitch in Hyderabad. He pointed out that players often bowled balls of incorrect length, which allowed the batsmen to gain maximum advantage. Gavaskar also recalled that during the partnership between Tilak Verma and Nitish Kumar Reddy, West Indies bowlers also used half-volley deliveries, but they subsequently corrected their mistakes and improved their game.

Discussing the situation on JioHotstar, Sunil Gavaskar stated: 'We often talk about pitches and blame them for not helping the bowlers. But if you bowl half-volleys, what is the pitch's fault here?' He added that the success of the West Indies bowlers was achieved through bowling of the correct length and the use of yorkers. Gavaskar's comment clearly showed that the bowlers must work on improving their game instead of finding excuses in circumstances.

In the T20 match in Hyderabad, the West Indies team, having lost the toss, started with an aggressive approach and scored 247 runs while losing three wickets. Shai Hope played an inconspicuous innings, scoring 102 runs without getting out, while Shimron Hetmyer put pressure on the Indian bowlers, scoring 33 runs in just 12 balls. The West Indies batsmen did not give the Indian bowlers a chance to attack and took the team to a large score.

In response, India also adopted an aggressive approach. Sanju Samson scored 56 runs off 23 balls, and Tilak Verma and Nitish Kumar Reddy also tried to bring the team back into the game. Nevertheless, the West Indies bowlers managed to come back at a critical moment and restrict India to 223 runs. With this victory, West Indies leveled the five-match series at 2-2.

Indian captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that the pitch became slightly slower in the middle of the match, and there was extra bounce. However, he highly praised the West Indies bowlers, noting that they changed their strategy according to the conditions and the pitch. Shreyas Iyer noted that when the Indian team started applying pressure to try and get back into the game, the West Indies bowlers countered brilliantly. He emphasized that the last match of the series will be exciting, and the team needs to show better performance on the field. The captain clearly stated that the team will not abandon its aggressive playing style. Shreyas Iyer added that the team needs to believe in its way of playing and demonstrate better performance at the right time in the next match.
