Mental Health of Generation Z: Analyzing Chat Communication and Hidden Emotions

Currently, for Generation Z, chatting has become the easiest way to share thoughts, find out about things, or express dissatisfaction, whether it's communication with friends or family. However, a question arises: is a person who types 'I'm fine' in a chat truly in good shape?

Often, people are unable to openly express their feelings. In such cases, they try to convey their thoughts through short messages, emojis, and specific words. Understanding the specific language of Generation Z communication allows one to better grasp their emotional state.

When the response to a question about well-being is 'I'm fine,' it does not guarantee that everything is going well. Sometimes the interlocutor is experiencing difficulties but does not want to share them, fearing they won't be understood or that they might bother someone. Instead of simply ending the conversation after reading the reply, it is worth gently asking if everything is truly okay.

If a person who previously sent long messages starts responding only with 'yes,' 'fine,' 'uh-huh,' or 'okay,' this might give you a sense of change. Perhaps they are busy, tired, or simply not in the mood to talk at the moment. Nevertheless, one should not assume that every short answer means irritation or sadness. This should only be noted in cases of constant changes in behavior.

People sometimes use emojis as support instead of talking about their feelings directly. A happy smiley face does not always indicate happiness, and using laughter to evade conversation can be a way to hide problems. However, the meaning of emojis differs for each person, so making hasty conclusions about emotions without clarification is incorrect.

Sometimes members of Generation Z say, 'It doesn't matter, leave it,' after sharing their problems. This may mean that they do not want to talk at the moment or that they are having trouble finding the right words. In such situations, instead of asking many questions, one should give them some time. It is necessary to assure them that you are ready to listen when they themselves want to talk.

Understanding is more important than decoding chats

Although understanding the language of Generation Z communication is important, trying to interpret every message is also mistaken. A person's true feelings cannot be understood solely from words. Often, it is much more useful to talk in person, being near each other.

Understanding Gen Z Boundaries: Why Setting Personal Limits Does Not Mean Distancing in Relationships

In modern families, disputes often arise between children and parents over various issues: from checking phones to visiting friends or interfering in private life. In such situations, representatives of Generation Z often talk about their 'boundaries' or ask for them to be respected. This raises the question of why Gen Z frequently brings up the topic of boundaries, and why it is important for parents to understand this.

Personal boundaries are defined as establishing limits regarding one's own life, feelings, time, and decisions. Simply put, it is an expression of what a person likes and what causes them concern. For example, a person may not want their parents to check their phone without permission or try to find out every detail of their private life. This does not necessarily mean they want to hide something; perhaps the person simply needs personal space.

The concept of boundaries is extremely important for Generation Z because they place great value on their preferences, private life, and mental well-being. They expect their opinions to be heard and their decisions to be respected. Sometimes a conflict arises between parental care and the youth's need for freedom. For instance, parents might call frequently to find out where their child is and who they are with, which is a cause for worry for them, but for the child, this can be perceived as a lack of trust, leading to misunderstanding between them.

Parents should realize that it is normal for children to grow up and begin having their own preferences and private lives. Constant questioning, comparisons with others, or ignoring children's feelings can cause them discomfort. However, this does not mean parents should stop giving advice or showing care. It is important that they know how to express their thoughts while attentively listening to their children. If a child sets a boundary on any issue, instead of anger, they should try to understand the reason for that feeling.

Setting boundaries is not equivalent to distancing oneself from parents or refusing to listen to them. It means mutual respect for feelings and needs in a relationship. Children should also understand that the manner in which they express their opinion matters. They can communicate their problems without shouting or humiliating the other person.

The concept of Gen Z boundaries applies not only to relationships with parents. The younger generation establishes its boundaries in all relationships and in its personal space, independently determining how much time to dedicate to a certain person and how closely to interact.
