Netflix announces layoff of a thousand employees amid stock decline

Netflix implemented a round of layoffs on Wednesday, the 14th, affecting approximately one thousand employees, which corresponds to 6% of its global workforce. This represents the largest cut made by the company since 2022, occurring in a context of slowing growth and increasing investor pressure on the platform's performance.

In an internal communication, co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters announced that most of the personnel reductions will be concentrated in the product, technology, legal, and human resources departments.

Netflix's shares have fallen by over 40% over the last twelve months. One concern raised is public engagement, which registered a modest increase of only 2% during the first half of this year, according to Deadline.

Additionally, the platform has faced challenges in producing series that achieve the same level of cultural impact as hits like Stranger Things, Round 6, and Wednesday. Productions that returned with new seasons showed a decline in viewership compared to previous periods.

A memo obtained by Deadline revealed that executives acknowledged the impact of these layoffs and emphasized the support offered to professionals leaving the company. They stated: 'Decisions like these are never easy, and we do not make them lightly. Our main priority today is to support those who are leaving Netflix.'

The failed attempt to acquire Warner Bros.' studio and streaming assets also generated doubts among investors regarding the company's expansion plans. However, executives refute the need for a major acquisition to ensure sustained growth.

During a conference held by Bloomberg earlier this month, Sarandos admitted that the pace of expansion is below his expectations. He stated: 'Overall, we are not growing as fast as I would like, and we are working to accelerate that pace.'

In this scenario, Netflix has adopted a strategy of diversifying its catalog to motivate subscribers to stay on the platform longer. This approach includes initiatives that go beyond traditional series and film formats.

Despite the cuts, the company maintains competitive advantages in the fight for subscribers. According to the analysis firm Antenna, the cancellation rate in the United States is slightly above 2%. The layoff announcements occurred one week before the next quarterly earnings release. In communication to employees, Sarandos and Peters assured that Netflix will continue to invest in sectors of greater relevance and will proceed according to its full-year earnings projection.

Netflix lays off 1,000 employees, largest cut since 2022

Netflix implemented a wave of layoffs representing about 6% of its global workforce, totaling approximately 1,000 employees. This is the largest personnel adjustment made by the company since 2022, when around 450 professionals were let go.

Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters formalized this decision by sending an email memorandum on Wednesday, October 14th. The justification provided is that the cut is part of a strategy focused on directing resources to areas with the greatest potential for expansion.

In a section of the statement released by Variety, it was stated that the company will continue to invest heavily in high-impact sectors to drive innovation and service improvement. The layoffs will primarily affect technology and product development teams, as well as legal and human resources departments.

Despite recent cuts and stock devaluation, Netflix reported revenue of US$ 12.56 billion (equivalent to R$ 63.6 billion) and a net profit of US$ 3.4 billion (R$ 17.1 billion) in the second quarter of 2026 alone. The company's projection for the current year is to reach about US$ 51 billion in revenue, signaling a 13% increase compared to the previous year.

In addition to high revenue, there was a 2% growth in platform viewing hours during the first half compared to the same period last year. However, the challenge lies in the company's ability to convert this audience into new revenue streams.

Ross Benes, a senior analyst at the consultancy eMarketer, cited by Reuters, pointed out that Netflix has not yet managed to create a second revenue source comparable in magnitude to existing subscriptions, indicating that income diversification remains a critical point.

It is relevant to note that Netflix began its efforts to find alternative revenue sources among streaming services in 2022. Currently, there are over 250 million active subscribers on the ad-supported plan, whose cost in Brazil is R$ 20.90, and this area is expected to generate US$ 3 billion (R$ 15.1 billion) by 2026.

Another factor of concern is the engagement level, meaning the time the public spends on the platform's content. The service faces pressure from direct competitors, such as major media conglomerate streamers including Disney+ and HBO Max, as well as video platforms like YouTube and TikTok, where users themselves create content for free and popularize new formats, such as vertical series.

Another event that raised questions about the company's next steps was the attempted acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery studios. In February, Netflix opted to abandon the deal after receiving a higher offer from Skydance.

According to Reuters, the company's shares were accumulating a drop of approximately 25% in 2026 until Wednesday, although they showed a slight recovery immediately after the layoff announcement.

Netflix plans 5% workforce reduction; announcement may happen soon

Netflix is planning to reduce its workforce by approximately 5%, with the announcement of this measure potentially being released as early as next week. This news was reported by Puck News, which based its information on sources familiar with the matter.

The company has not yet commented on this report. This potential reorganization occurs in a context of increasing competition in the streaming sector and the need to find new ways to generate revenue.

According to estimates from Puck News, layoffs could affect around 850 individuals, based on a total of 17 thousand global employees. The last major wave of public layoffs at Netflix occurred in 2022, when approximately 150 professionals were dismissed due to slow growth and declining subscribers.

Competition for audience attention has intensified with the growth of YouTube in both video consumption and the advertising market. To increase its revenues, Netflix has been directing investments into three distinct areas.

Furthermore, the company is under pressure from the financial market. As reported by Puck News, Netflix's shares lost value after an unsuccessful attempt to acquire Warner Bros. last year, during a period of declining user engagement.

Netflix's financial results disclosure is scheduled for October 20. There is an expectation that co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters will present strategies to resume growth momentum and improve stock performance.

As of now, the company has not officially confirmed the cuts nor specified which sectors will be impacted.
