Muizenberg Beach project reaches 82% completion, phased opening approaching

According to data from Chand Consultants, the improvement project at Muizenberg Beach has completed 82% of its work, bringing closer the possibility of partially opening the renovated promenade to visitors.

As part of the project, the old sandstone sea wall was dismantled, and beach cleaning is currently underway before sand replenishment. Work is also actively progressing in the western parking area: concrete benches have been installed, earthworks are nearing completion, and the installation of curbs, paving, and street lighting is ongoing.

Foundations for the new central sanitary facility are being built, while renovations continue on the Shark Spotters and Adaptive Surfing buildings. Internal walls are being erected, and the exterior facade of the Shark Spotters building is being prepared for the first coat of paint.

At the Surfer’s Corner site, work is underway to fix deficiencies before the planned opening, including sandblasting the buffer before the area becomes accessible to the public.

Future plans include dismantling the remaining parts of the old sea wall, planting local saplings in the distant and eastern sections of the beach, and constructing an addition to the new sanitary facility. Work will also continue on the remaining flowerbeds and the Surfer’s pergola, which is planned to be finished within the next month.

The first phase of opening is expected to include the western parking area, access to the St James pedestrian path, the square in front of the station, and beach access points.

In response to questions about the fate of the old sandstone sea wall, the project team announced the intention to integrate suitable fragments into the new landscape on the promenade. Larger stones will be used in the design of the new playground. Any additional suitable pieces not included in the play area will be incorporated into the stone cladding of the foundation reinforcement wall along the PRASA wall. This wall will also provide stone seating in the square in front of the station.

The project update indicates that the team's main goal is to open the beach to the public by mid-December 2026. Construction crews are working across the entire site to maximize progress before completion.

Community members are invited to attend the next public relations meeting on Tuesday, October 27, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at The Lookout, Zandvlei. At this meeting, updates on the project will be provided, and there will be an opportunity to interact directly with the team.
