As part of Mobility Month in October, the Western Cape Government has launched a three-day campaign offering free safety inspections for vehicles used to transport students and public transport across the province.
The campaign will run from Tuesday, October 13, 2026, to Thursday, October 15. The initiative aims to encourage proactive vehicle maintenance and reduce the number of preventable road accidents by identifying mechanical faults before they pose a threat to passengers and students.
Inspections are conducted daily from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Gina Louw Traffic Training College in Brackenfell, as well as at numerous municipal and private transport testing centers throughout the Western Cape.
Although these assessments do not replace official technical condition tests, qualified inspectors conduct targeted checks on critical components. Tires, braking systems, lighting, suspension, universal joints, exhaust systems, wipers, and other vital safety elements are checked. After each inspection, operators are issued a printed diagnostic report detailing any defects requiring immediate attention or repair.
Leadership's Involvement
Maxine Bezuidenhout, Chief Director of Traffic Management in the Western Cape Mobility Department, emphasized the need for joint efforts to ensure the safety of the province's roads. Bezuidenhout noted that 'Mobility Month in October provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of the collective responsibility we all bear for maintaining the safety of our roads.' She added that free transport safety checks allow school and public transport operators to detect potential defects and address safety issues before they endanger passengers. These free inspections are an important preventative measure contributing to more reliable and safer transport services. She urged all operators to take advantage of this free service and prioritize transport safety.
Officials particularly stressed that preventive maintenance remains one of the most effective ways to minimize vehicle breakdowns and increase the reliability of transport for thousands of daily passengers and schoolchildren.
