Chief Minister Reha Gupta unexpectedly arrived in the Mukerji Nagar area of Delhi to listen to the problems of students preparing for entrance exams. During the visit, she sat among the students and learned about their difficulties. Students raised issues such as the need for a free library, high PG accommodation rents, and women's safety concerns.
Following this, the Chief Minister ordered the renovation of a closed toilet into a pink toilet, and also instructed improvements in cleanliness, water supply, street lighting, and CCTV systems.
It should be noted that Mukerji Nagar is a major hub for talent preparation in Delhi. Many students come here to prepare for exams such as UPSC, SSC, and other competitive tests. However, besides tuition fees, they face issues related to housing, rent, safety, and library availability.
Recently, the issue of dormitory and rented room safety has been actively discussed in Delhi's student areas. In September 2026, a five-story building collapsed in Satya Niketan, resulting in seven deaths, five of whom were students from Delhi University. This led to questions about the safety of student residences and the condition of buildings.
Students living in Mukerji Nagar and other student areas also reported problems related to small rooms, high rents, difficulties with security deposit refunds, and poor maintenance. Furthermore, complaints were received regarding issues with cleanliness, water supply, dampness, and safety in some places.
After listening to the students' problems, the Chief Minister gave instructions to officials to improve the area's conditions, including ensuring cleanliness, water supply, street lighting, and CCTV systems. It was also ordered to convert the closed toilet into a pink toilet to provide female students with better and safer facilities. Nevertheless, there is a discrepancy between the directives given during the inspection and their actual implementation on the ground. When students can benefit from these amenities, it will depend on the actions of the relevant departments.
