The Central Bank in India recently raised its key interest rate, leading to higher borrowing costs for clients of many banks. However, there is a question about which countries have the highest loan interest rates and where India ranks in this list.
According to data collected on the Twitter platform (now X) via World of Statistics and based on information from Trading Economics, countries with the highest interest rates include Venezuela, Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan.
Venezuela leads the list of countries with the highest interest rates, where the rate stands at 58.93% Interest Rate, making borrowing in that country the most expensive.
Iran's oil-based economy is suffering due to military actions with the US, and the country's interest rates have also reached a high level. Iran is among the top ten countries with high interest rates, holding a rate of 23%. It ranks eighth after Turkey (37%), Argentina (29%), Zimbabwe (27.5%), Lebanon (25%), Malawi (24%), and Nigeria (23%).
The ranking of countries with high interest rates includes nations from Russia to Pakistan. Russia's interest rate, according to data concerning Vladimir Putin, is 14%, placing it 18th on the list. Brazil is ranked 21st with an interest rate of 13.75%. As for Pakistan, its interest rate is 11.5%, and it ranks 28th.
Compared to countries like Pakistan, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela, India did not make the top 40 in basic interest rates, indicating a significantly lower rate level. It should be noted that last week, during the Monetary Policy Committee meeting of the Central Bank, the repo rate was increased by 25 basis points, bringing the key rate in the country to 5.50%.
The high level of interest rates in the aforementioned countries is due to several factors. One of the main ones is the sharp depreciation of the local currency. Furthermore, rising inflation, which central banks attempt to control by raising rates, as well as weakened economies, political crises, and foreign exchange reserve deficits force governments to increase interest rates.
